Coffee? Tea? Anything?

Postby Preggersatlast » Sat Nov 21, 2015 4:52 am

Hi Ladies!

So, I'm not a big coffee drinker and I'm probably overly paranoid due to precious losses, so I haven't had any coffee since I found out I was pregnant. But, I am SO craving some caffeine right about now!

I gotta know... Who is still drinking coffee, anyone substituting black tea, what about a soda here and there?

I've always read that as long as you stay under 200 mg of caffeine per day, it's supposed to be ok. I don't even have near that much, but I allow myself a caffeinated drink once in a while. Good luck!

I just limited my caffeine intake and changed to decaf coffee altogether :) Even now, I order all my coffees out in decaf and use decaf grounds in my iCoffee cup. I had caffeinated tea before ONE prenatal appointment and baby's heartbeat was still well within normal range but definitely far elevated from where it had been, so I've been a little more careful since. I limit myself to one cup of a caffeinated beverage in the morning, and that's pretty much it.

http://www.caffeineinformer.com/ has been my friend this whole time too, since I can now easily figure out how much caffeine I've had or am planning to have, and ensure that it's below my personal threshold, as well as the "safe" level for pregnancy.

I switched to tea because coffee tastes like poop to me at the moment, but one cup of coffee a day definitely cannot hurt. You're allowed up to 200 mg apparently

I'm not a coffee drinker so I don't have any advice on that.
What I can tell you though is that at my last appointment my midwife advised me to stop drinking sodas but that's because I've gained 4-5 lbs already and I'm still in the first trimester. She didn't seem concerned at all about the amount of caffeine you can get from those. I would say that you can have everything you want as long as you limit yourself. Maybe follow the 200 g a day rule as a reference.

My OB had me off all sodas, all coffee. I a big coffee drinker. If I am allowed and not nursing or pregnant, i drink either 2-3 ventis or large coffees a day.. no cream just coffee.. Big coffee drinker.. I had to give it up. It was a shock to me how easy and cold turkey i quit.. The things you do for your unborn child.. When i would feel the need to have a taste i would get a small decaf cream and sugar. Like mentioned above all with moderation.. With caffeine you can do 200 mg of it. So thats like a small coffee 8oz or something like that. It does not mean a triple shot of expresso in a small cup.

The other thing with teas, do remember they are an herb, and with herbs, when you drink the same tea often, or daily and round the clock, it becomes a medicated dose. Rule of thumb, in moderation, and switch your teas up, that way your system doesn't adapt to it, and your getting to much of it.

So happy someone brought this up. I'm a huge coffee drinker- love the taste but mostly, and sadly, I'm super addicted, to where I get a migraine if I don't have a cup of coffee by 12 pm. It's bad... I when I first got my BFP I decided to quit cold turkey and deal with the fatigue but the first migraine I got was so bad it lasted over a day. So I've decided to do a "half-caff" cup in the morning, and most mornings I only drink about half of that. But it's enough to prevent the headaches! Thank you guys for this information, it makes me feel better about it and I'm hoping I can slowly ween myself down to decaf, since decaf actually still has a small amount of caffeine in it. It's name is deceiving! Good luck to you all~

xoxo

When I really need some caffeine (i.e. so tired), I'd drink a can of coke. I know the sugar sucks, but it really helps lighten the mood. And I limit myself to that one can per day though I don't make it an every day thing.

As a rule, I've also been avoiding tea even though I LOVE tea. But it's hard to figure out exactly which tea has caffeine, which are too herbal to drink. So as a general rule, I just avoid all tea.

These days I mainly drink water, orange juice, milk and maybe some apple cider. Over Thanksgiving, I treated myself to some nice sparkling apple cider, which was just lovely.

I asked my high risk specialist this question. He said that one cup a coffee a day is perfectly fine! Yay!! I'm still not gonna have one a day because I don't need it, but it's nice to know that it's an option if I'm really craving one!

For now, I'll just stick with my black tea and honey a couple evenings a week. I have really been enjoying it!
