Green tea!!??

Hi,

Before I was pregnant I drank quite a lot of green tea, well only about 1 or 2 cups a day, sometimes a bit more. Since I found out I was pregnant I was more careful about the caffeine so would only drink one cup in the morning most days or I'd replace it with a decaf version or have one normal and one decaf version. This wasn't everyday, mainly on work days... and I was on holiday for two weeks and only drank one peppermint tea a day during that time. Now in my second trimester, I've been drinking one cup of normal (with caffeine) green tea a day when I first wake up. THEN I saw something online about green tea being bad during pregnancy whether it's decaffeinated or not!! I'm quite worried now :( It's so frustrating that I didn't know about this before and could have caused some harm :( Most articles say 'if you drink too much' but how much is too much? I'll stop now of course but I'm so worried if I've done any damage already. I would really appreciate your opinions on this matter if anyone knows anything..... Stupid green tea!!

I started getting migraines at the end of my first tri and my midwife suggested a cup of green tea because the caffeine can help. I think with most things, they are referring to excessive amounts. If you were drinking 5 cups of green tea a day, that probably wouldn't be the best, but I'm sure everything is fine. Chat with your midwife/OB about it next time you have an appt... I bet they'll say the same!

I think it has something to do with something in the tea, that makes you flush out things that don't necessarily need to be flushed out. But Im no medical professional, so like Kimberlina said, talk to your Dr/midwife next time you see them. Im sure you and baby are fine Momma.

this may be late...but the problem with the green tea is the anti oxidants, and there is something specific that can hinder the absorption of folic acid. higher chance of baby with neural tube defects, that being said, I "think - non medical degree here" after the 1st trimester, that risk is gone.

As above, the risks are mainly the caffeine and the interference with absorption of folic acid/folate. Like you said above, a cup or two (even 3-4 is probably ok since it's much less caffeine than black tea or coffee) of green tea per day is just fine on the caffeine front.

As for the folic acid, I haven't found a specific amount, but the couple articles I did find about it said "large" or "excessive" amounts of green tea and that you'd be unlikely to even want to drink that much anyway. Also, the one article said that the data on this study was weak, so they don't want to draw conclusions from it yet. To be safe, I keep it to 2 cups a day and take my prenatal at least a couple hours after or before having the tea.

Everyone has a different hobby, and I have some, one of them listing song with a cup of tea, my wife who is pregnant loves too. Recently I have checked her up, and the result is a little bit negative. So my friend who is a doctor suggested her to have green tea every day. He has also given me this link to search up some, http://bestproducts-4u.com/best-green-tea-brands/. Still, now she is on it, and she is feeling good, and me and my friend who is a doctor thinks that this will be better for anyone not only for a diabetics patient or a pregnant woman.
