Single umbilical artery

Postby momoftreasures » Tue Oct 08, 2013 7:40 pm

We found out today at our 20 week anatomy scan that the baby only has one instead of two arteries in his umbilical cord. I need to hear some positive stories about it. He apparently had no other noticeable anomalies and the sonographer said DO NOT WORRY. I'm worried anyway.

Sorry to hear this, but on a positive note a friend had the same thing. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl in late August. She was told her baby might be a little on the small side but other than that she would be fine. The baby was close to 7 lbs. Just make sure you're eating well and you and your baby should be great!

My great nephew was a SUA baby. Hes healthy now, but he did have a few comlications. Wont say what they are since you asked for good stories. He is 8 months and happy now :)

What were his complications? As long as he is alive and well now, I'm good. They called mine an "isolated SUA" which means nothing else was detected on ultrasound.

He had an esophageal fistula, one kidney, and anatomical problems with his heart. These conditions were not detected until he was born. His first 3 weeks were tough. But he is amazing :) happy and doing very well. Docs say worst case may be a minor heart surgery later in life. He did need surgery to fix his esophageal fistula, so he could swallow. He was airlifted to a big hospital 2 hours after he was born.

My son had IUGR due to placental issues. I think as long as the amniotic fluid is at a good level and that measurements are good then everything should be fine. They just worry if nutrients etc are not delivered appropriately with these types of situations but if you are truly concerned ask to be seen by a perinatologist or higher risk doctor just to allay any of your fears but I am sure if your doctor said not to worry than you should be fine.

Just an update on this. I delivered my son two weeks ago, three days before his due date. He was my latest baby (out of 8) and my biggest. He weighed 8lbs, 12 oz and was 20.5 inches. So...the SUA did not affect his growth at all and he has no complications whatsoever. Praising God for a perfectly healthy baby!
