Rough couple of days

Postby MrsK » Thu Sep 18, 2014 7:01 pm

I have an office job so I pretty much just sit at my desk for 8-9 hours a day. I rarely get up or take breaks. I noticed yesterday morning that my left leg felt weird and I kept re-adjusting my position. By the time I left work, my left lower leg was swollen and felt hard. I called my sister who is a nurse and asked if it was normal. She said both legs wouldn't be as much of a concern but just 1 leg could mean I have a blood clot. I called my Dr who told me to go to the hospital. I was there until 12:30am (6 hours total), starving and waiting for leg ultrasound results. Luckily they were clear and baby had a steady heartbeat of 140 so thankfully it wasn't a serious issue and my leg is back to normal. They said it was probably due to sitting for too long, dehydration (I'm terrible as drinking fluids), and crossing my legs. Besides drinking more water and taking a few breaks throughout the day, does anyone have any suggestions? I've heard of compression socks. Are those helpful? I do get about 30 minutes of exercise a day so I'll continue with that. Oh and to top it all off, I was rear ended this morning! Tomorrow can only get better, right?! :)

My god... sounds like a hell of a day. My suggestions and what I do for myself is to keep legs elevated during the day, take frequent pee breaks, stretch, and avoid salt. And drink sooooo much water.

Yikes! I sit at the office all day so I got compression socks to wear and also avoid crossing my legs. I also go for a walk at lunch and try to get up often and walk around a bit to keep circulation going.

I get so busy I forget about my water too but it does help.

Would sitting on one of those balance ball chairs help promote circulation? http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywor ... g65juhis_b

I'll definitely look into the compression socks. A woman at my office does actually sit on one of these balls! I'm not allowed to cut back on my salt intake though since I have low blood pressure. Thanks for the tips ladies!!

I wish I had one of those balls for work but I don't think they would allow it. We can't even have personal items on our desks, like photos of family.

Kismet, I missed yesterday that you got rear ended...geez!! Hope you are ok and not too sore. What a day!

When I read your post first thing that went through my head was a clot. Set your alarm and try to take a break for a bit every hour. With you not moving, dehydration, and the fact that pregnant women are more likely to get clots because of the relaxin on our blood vessels, it's important that you move. SO set your alarm so once an hour you are reminded to walk around for 60 seconds and stretch. Better yet, do that every 30 minutes. My BFF just delivered her baby and was in the hospital on blood thinners because she got a clot. However, she ended up having a factor V defect (factor V is a protein essential to the clotting cascade). She had two other babies and had a swollen and hot calf and by her third baby, she had a clot in her thigh. DVTs are wicked. The deeper the vein, the bigger the vein. Don't want that clot to break and go to your lungs or worse, your brain and give you a stroke. A friend friend nursing school died last march 3 months post partum because of a clot. Traveled to her brain, tore up her carotid artery and she died of a stroke. 26 years old.

Take care of yourself.

Wow that's so scary and sad :( hearing that definitely motivates me to take better care of myself. Thanks for sharing and setting a reminder is a great idea since I get so wrapped up in what I'm doing that I forget.

I have the same problem at work, having to sit all day at a desk. My feet are pretty swollen by the end of the day. I'm trying to get better about drinking more water and moving around when I can. I feel your pain girl!
