Before Baby To-Do List!

Postby jeepgirl88 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 7:07 am

Well ladies I'm 22 weeks today, so past the halfway point and only 6 weeks left in the second trimester! I'm starting to freak out a little bit about getting everything done in time and still having time to sleep and breathe. I'm obsessive about planning/organization/getting things done, so I decided to make a 'Before Baby List' with everything there is to do. Then I decided to put certain tasks under each month so I don't get too overwhelmed and try and do it all at once.

Here's what I have so far:
    OCTOBER
    *Baby room to be painted
    *Put crib together
*Ask Dr. about newborn/breastfeeding classes and inquire about breast pump
*Start reading up on baby care
    *Research strollers

    NOVEMBER
    *Set up nursery décor
*Put up wall shelves in nursery
    *Get rocking chair
    *Buy stroller and second carseat
*Continue reading up on breastfeeding/baby care

    DECEMBER
*Call about/get everything set up for maternity leave/EI
    *Wash any used clothing/blankets
    *Organize baby's closet and drawers
*Start buying essentials like diapers and soap
    *Take maternity photos

    JANUARY
    *Prepare meals to freeze
    *Stock fridge/cupboards with food
*Stock up on diapers, wipes, baby soap etc.
*Stock up on toilet paper and other household essentials
    *Clean entire house
*Set up an appointment for newborn photoshoot
    *Pack hospital bag
    *Tour hospital
    *Install carseat

What else do I need to add? I'm sure there's stuff I missed. Share your own list!! We can also post updates once we've accomplished tasks :)

Good idea, Artemis! I actually have a spa gift certificate that DH got me for my birthday in August, it was for $150 and so far I used it for 1 pedicure so I still have like $90 left. I'm planning on getting a manicure around Christmas and maybe something else too! :D

Stalking from March DDC...holy batman JeepGirl you're one organized mama! I'm such a type B personality...I always say I'm going to make a list and half the time never get around to it or lose it somewhere. I usually just "wing it" - which I'm realizing I may not be able to do with this situation. I'm totally stealing this list!! The only issue I see us having is that we will be buying our first home in January - so I'll be having to do majority of these things in a 2 month time window 8O But at least this list will help out some! Not sure I could have come up with it myself  Thanks girl!

LOVE your idea Artemis! SOO will be doing that

One thing I did notice that wasn't on your list was to "baby proof" the house...you know baby gates, child locks on cabinet doors, etc. We have curious cats at home that like to get into things - so this was an almost instant thought for me. If the cats do it - surely baby will do it too. hehe

To be honest, baby proofing is a huge pain for everyone involved, lol. It definitely needs to be done at some point, but until baby is self-mobile it's just not critical. Having to deal with extra latches on the cabinets while holding a newborn as you try to grab something from the kitchen is obnoxious and unnecessary. Definitely register for everything you'll need to baby proof the house, but you shouldn't need it for a few months :)

That's a very good point Frosted - I didn't think about it like that...you really won't need the baby proofing until baby is mobile, which is of course months down the road. I think my mind set was get everything done at once because once baby is here there won't be time for much else.lol I always hear stories from new parents of a newborn baby about how they don't sleep and it's constant "baby" mode all the time. I just fear by waiting I'll end up stabbing myself in the hand with a screwdriver or slamming my hand in cabinet doors due to lack of sleep or not paying full attention due to watching baby. LOL

Glad I could help Skye :) I never planned on baby-proofing until down the road, and never even bothered putting the stuff to my registry but now I'm thinking maybe I should add a few of those items...one less thing to buy later!

Haha, so I did say I was obsessive about organizing/planning right? Can you believe I've made more lists, to expand on points from the original list? This week I made lists of things to buy and what freezer meals I want to make. I felt crazy but then I realized that this way I can start picking up things as they go on sale and not have to spend hundreds of dollars on everything last minute in January. And I'll have less chance of forgetting something this way...like I realized the other day that I only own thongs, and that I can't wear a pad with them so I'll need to buy some underwear for postpartum. Then yesterday at Sears I saw 6 packs of underwear on Buy one get one free, SCORE!

For baby items, I have a list I printed off from my registry website, and I'm just checking things off there as I buy them (my shower will be after she's born so we'll need to have all the essentials bought).

Here are my others lists..

Food to stock up on
    *cereal
    *granola
    *canned fruit
    *canned soup
    *crackers, chips
    *frozen pizzas
    *coffee/k-cups
    *granola bars
    *frozen fruit
    *bread (to freeze)
    *cheese
    *condiments

Household items to stock up on
    *toilet paper
    *paper towels
    *Kleenex
    *soap & shampoo
    *razors
    *laundry soup
    *dish soap
    *garbage/recycling/compost bags
    *toothpaste
    *shower curtain liners

Postpartum items to buy
    *pads
    *underwear
    *stool softener
    *Prenatals
    *new socks and PJ's

Freezer Meals
    *Lasanga
    *Shepherd's Pie
    *Mac N Cheese
    *Spaghetti Sauce
    *Chicken/Broccoli Casserole
    *Taco Roll-ups
    *Slow Cooker Cashew Chicken
    *Chicken Pot-pies
    *Taco Soup
    *Muffins
    *Cookies

Skye, no need to fear that! Most babies are sleeping through the night around 3 months, or are very close. You can sleep train if you want to, though it's not for everyone. Either way, after the first few months most people are able to get a lot more sleep than in the beginning, so by the time you need to set up all the baby proofing you should be great shape for handling a screwdriver ;)

@jeepgirl, just curious - will you have anyone to help you after birth? i.e. mother, mother-in-law or friends? I just started playing around with a baby registry and think that BabyList (http://babyli.st/) is great. You can ask friends and family who live near you to pitch in on helping you out after you give birth (instead of them getting you a monetary or registry gift).

My list is winding down! We bought our travel system this weekend, and the nursery is almost done. We just have to move the change table upstairs and I have a few things to put on the wall. I already washed all the used clothing and just have to finish putting it away, and I started picking up wipes etc. on sale. We also went to Costco this weekend and got a few things there like toiler paper and laundry detergent, so hopefully we have lots of that stuff to last awhile :)

I'm excited for December to do maternity photos and then we'll really be getting ready- installing the carseat, packing my hospital bag etc!

Do you use coupons Jeep?? I would suggest (if you can in CA) to start using coupons for things - you'd be surprised how much you can save on stuff! I noticed you said you got some stuff at Costco while you were out...the reason I bring up coupons is because you'd think that buying in bulk as Costco would be cheaper, BUT with sales and coupons you can actually get stuff a ton cheaper that way. Just a thought! Every penny counts. Sadly - we are shopping for a new home, we'll be lucky to move by January. That is going to put us at the last minute getting the nursery together...AAHH!

I'm not a huge couponer but I always look for sales and compare prices. I also try to shop at stores that take Air Miles and they send out books every few months with Air Miles coupons, I do use those!

I signed up for this thing at Shoppers Drug Mart too called the V.I.B (Very Important Baby Club) and was supposed to get coupons and sample products in the mail but nothing yet...I may have to call about it.

Our closest grocery store (Sobeys) sometimes has a BOGO free event so next time they have one of those I was going to take advantage and buy extras of stuff then.

Good luck with the house hunting, I hope you find something soon!! At least you live in a warm climate for moving in January, we moved last year the first week of February, in the middle of our frigid Canadian winter...that was NOT fun!
