Weight of baby?

Postby hls268 » Thu Jan 27, 2011 4:24 pm

I am 32 weeks and had an ultrasound today and they said the baby weighs 3 lbs 11 ounces and that is a bit small. That doesn't seem small to me, what do you think?

At 31 (or 32, they give you so many darn due dates I don't even know anymore) weeks my little girl weighed 3lb 12oz and they said she was in the 40th percentile and didn't make a big deal. The tech just said I'll probably be having another 6 pound baby. I think as long as the baby is growing properly you're fine!

Like PP said as long as baby continues to grow I think it's fine.

I'm not sure why they would say that's small. At this point the baby gains around an ounce a day so that would mean the baby would be over 7lbs at birth if you go to 40 weeks. That weight sounds great to me!

Yeah as long as baby keeps growing, it's not a big deal! My baby was estimated at 6 lbs at 33.5 weeks, which was on the large side (I think like almost 90th percentile) so there's a lot of variation in size.

I have heard SOOOOOO many stories where they are WAY off on weight estimates anyways... I wouldn't put a second thought on it. My baby is measuring two weeks ahead at this point... but weight can only be a very rough estimate.

Yes... I have a friend who was induced at 38 weeks because ultrasound said the baby was already 11 pounds.

The baby was actually 7 pounds.

My SIL gave birth to a 10lb 11oz baby boy, and the dr's predicted him to be about 8 1/2 lbs. They said if they had known he was that big, they would have done a c/s... she pushed him out though 8O So no, they're not always right with the weight.

My perinatologist just told me that my baby weighs 5 lbs at 32 weeks. So "measuring big" . . . but that's with an error of plus or minus 12 oz. That's a big difference! So, he could be 4 lbs or 5 lbs or 6 lbs. I wouldn't be too concerned if I were you. They measure my DD when I was 33 weeks because they were worried that she was measuring small, and they said that she was 3 and a half lbs. She was 7 lbs 3 oz when born. Not too small or too large.

I am planning on refusing ultrasounds to determine weight. They can be so wrong. With my son they did several and determined that he was going to be 9-10lbs. He was actually 11lbs. So they were totally wrong. It only made me stress out more than if I just didn't know. I ended up with a c-section, But if I didn't know I was having a big baby I would have just gone into labor and if baby did not fit I would have just not progressed and had a c-section anyways.

That doesn't seem small to me. My DD was under 4lbs at 34 weeks and she was born at 8lbs 5oz. DS was over 4lbs at 32 weeks and was born at 8lbs 9oz. With this baby she was exactly 4lbs at 32 weeks and I'm expecting her to be over 8lbs as well! I wouldn't put too much stock in her estimated weight, it sounds completely fine to me and like everyone else said, they can be wayyyy off.

At 35 weeks, they told me my baby was 6 lbs 13 oz and that I could potentially have a huge baby on my hands (they were watching me for mild GD). Well, I watched what I ate and exercised a ton and was able to keep my sugars in range. 4 weeks later, I went into labor on my own and had a 8 lb 2 oz baby, just a fine weight and a fairly easy, med free labor.

So either my baby's weight slowed way down and he only gained just over a pound in a month, or they were way wrong on the u/s. I tend to think it might have been #2... I don't trust weight estimates on u/s.

My OB won't even tell what he thinks the weight is. I asked with my first(like a few weeks before my due date) and he said "I'll let you know when he's born". He says that no matter what he says the weight is, moms always worry that their baby is too big or too small.

I just had an u/s a few days ago at 32+2 due to GD and baby is estimated at 4 lb. 1 oz., they said it was 44th percentile. sounds good to me! Like others have said, estimates are just that - an estimate - and can be way off. And babies come in all different sizes that are normal!
