When does your OB do your third tri ultrasound?

Postby Twinklebug » Thu Mar 15, 2012 10:44 am

I have heard that some places dont do any sonos in the third tri at all. I was at my OB for my 32 week visit yesterday and asked about it. My OB is a group practice-she said she typically does one at 37-38 weeks to do a final check on position, size etc... But one of the other doctors that I see does it earlier-say 33-34 weeks. She basically left it up to me, saying "well, it depends who you are going to see next visit.." I am leaning towards waiting until the final weeks of the pregnancy just so it can hopefully be more accurate, but I know they can be really off anyway...Anyone have any thoughts?

My OB doesn't do an u/s after your 20 week anatomy scan unless there is some concern, ie. position, baby's size, GD, PreE, etc. With my DD I had like 5 between 34 and 37 weeks because I had PreE. Generally, they were not as exciting because the baby was so big that you couldn't see the whole face in the shot, and she already buried her face behind my pelvic bones. U/Ss are really fun to me though and I would love to have one at 33-34 weeks, and not for a scary reason!

Same here, We don't get them after 20 weeks unless they are needed. I have one scheduled for 34 weeks just to check size because of some issues we have had. But most people here don't have them unless needed

I wasn't going to be having one, but because my fundal height is 32 and I am 29 weeks and some days, the PA (sigh) is concerned that I am further along or something else is going on so I am getting an US at my next appt. She wanted me to have one that day, but they couldn't fit me in and the drive is over an hour to the doctor. So I was able to schedule it next appt, in two weeks, I will be 31 weeks.

I'm getting my next u/s at roughly 36 weeks because I'm measuring really small...the Dr. isn't super worried or anything because I'm 5'8" and he said it'd be really easy to hide a baby (big or small) in my belly. He also said that even though I'm measuring behind, I've been consistent in what growth I have had. So it's not like one week things just stopped or dramatically slowed. He's just doing the u/s to check size so that way we can have a better idea of what we'll be dealing with come delivery.

I had one last week at 36.5 weeks bc of a borderline GD diagnosis. They wanted to check baby's size. Otherwise, I don't think I would have had one scheduled.

I had one at 33 weeks to check size and everything. But I was high risk so I don't know if that was normal.

Wow, I think my doctor is ultrasound happy..lol

I wound up having one at 37 weeks, no conerns, they just said they wanted to double check size and position. I will be 39 weeks tomorrow, and my doctor said he will probably do ANOTHER sono on Monday-which is 2 days before my scheduled C/S. Not that I mind seeing the babe one last time befoire she arrives, but I had better not get a bill for all these sonos!

unless there's an issue, my office only does the 18-20 week dating scan...and the 12week down syndrome scan if you opt for it...

Most offices won't do too many, maybe one to find out how big the baby is and the position. Since I am high risk, they look at doing one every four weeks. Usually if they are worried about something they will order another one.

With my daughter 4 years ago I was sent in for an ultrasound at 34 weeks on the dot because of lack of movement. At that point they saw there was less fluid than they like so they sent me to be induced. They told me my little girl was 7-8 pounds give our take a pound, and then when she was born she was actually only 5lbs 9oz... big difference from what they told me, so yes there is quite a bit of give and take for accuracy, always expect at least 1lb off in either direction.

Ive had one at every single visit but that is because I have GD, but my first pregnancy was my normal one and I remember only having one at around 8 wks and 20 weeks for a gender scan but that was 9 years ago so guess things could have changed by now, when I had my son 8 years ago he had issues so that is why I had a few extra other than the 2 I already have. I guess it depends on drs I have heard ladies on one of my dd groups saying they had a 3rd tri ultrasound.

My doctor is doing one next week, at 36 weeks. I am not high risk she just called it a routine growth scan.
