Heartbeat/Gender? Just for fun...

Postby mrslig » Thu Nov 08, 2012 10:23 am

Hi ladies!

So, I just got back from my second prenatal appointment. I had my second ultrasound due to the fact that the doctor couldn't hear the heartbeat with the doppler today. (Just had a quickie to make sure everything was okay)

My husband wants a boy quite badly, but I'm just happy to have a healthy baby.

The heartbeat at the first ultrasound was 172 and this time was 176. I know it's an "old wive's tale" that you can determine the sex of your baby based on the heartbeat, but I thought I would do a little baby survey just for fun.

For those of you who know the sex of your baby and who remember heartbeats (which, let's be honest...I know you all do and will for some time to come!), post it below!

Thanks!!!

Here is a list of my baby boy's heartbeats at different appointments:

7w1d: 144 bpm
8w4d: 179 bpm
9w1d: 178 bpm
10w3d: 172 bpm
12w1d: 164 bpm

So, the old wives' tale says that anything 140+ is a girl. I'm not sure when in your pregnancy they mean, honestly. Around 8-10 weeks, most babies are up around 170ish anyway.

Good luck! :luck:

I'm having a boy and his heart rate was in the 160s until around 16 weeks, and then 155 until about 23 weeks. He's running around 148 right now. Research studies show that old wives tale is right about 50% of the time. ;)

Lurking...
DD's heart rate was always between 140-150. But I have read that if you are very physically active and have a low heart rate yourself, your baby's will be lower. I'm a marathoner and my resting heart rate was 45 before I was PG, so take that into account if you're a big exerciser too!

Our little boy's HR has been averaging 145 or so. It'll go up to 160 - 170 when he's moving, & down to the 130s when he's resting

None of my babies were lower than 140's. I really don't remember when my oldest son and daughters were. With my twin boys they were both in the 170's. this pregnancy is a girl and she has been in the 140's.

My baby at 16 weeks was 140bpm so nowhere near 170bmp and the MW wasnt concenred at all, she said my 140bmp was totally fine.

ETA I googled just to clarify the differences in what we know, and found this

By the beginning of the 9th week of pregnancy, the normal fetal heart rate is an average of 175 BPM. At this point it begins a rapid deceleration to the normal fetal heart rate for the middle of the pregnancy of about 120-180 BPM. There is also a slowing of the normal fetal heart rate in the last ten weeks of pregnancy, though the normal fetal heart rate is still about twice the normal adult's resting heart rate.

so that explains why at 9 weeks or so its really high but then it starts dropping so cos I didnt have my reading till 16weeks thats why mine wasnt in the 170's

Well, I appreciate all of your responses! They were fun to read and compare to my situation. My LO's HB has been in the low to mid 160's each time. We went for our gender scan Friday...and it's a BOY! Heartbeat was 156.

We are so excited! Thanks for all your input!
