Don't want to scare you... My breaking point is somewhere in between 7 and 8 cm's. The last 3 times I asked for an epidural around those cm's and of coarse they said it's too late. LOL For me crap gets real... Intense and fast labor pains that don't give me time to even think.

My midwife told me that most women experience "transition" around 7-8 cm..that's when a lot if ladies will say things like "I can't do this anymore" or request drugs or just generally get to an overall breaking point. She also reminded me that when you get to that point, it's almost over!! I have a little over a week til he's due and I excited/nervous/anxious to see how labor will go for me :)

I think it depends, but is typically around 7-8cm. That's when I started losing it with my daughter (no induction, no meds). With my son, though, I think it hit around 4-5cm, but that was with pitocin and a broken water. I was fully dilated less than two hours later, and he was my first birth. So I think when labor progresses on its own, 7-8cm is probably the norm. When it's artificially pushed along, it might be a bit earlier.

I must be an anomaly b/c I didn't think any of the labor was that bad! I was talking and eating cookies in between contractions almost right until the end. The only reason I knew I was in transition was because I started feeling nauseated. For me, pushing was the worst part, as in "holy f**k, there's no way I can do this!" I even lied a couple of times and said I wasn't having a contraction when I really was b/c I didn't want to push! Fortunately, that part only lasted about 15 minutes!

I think I hit it about 7-9cm. I dunno I was so delirious I can't remember lol. I remember lots of heavy, deep breathing and having DH put cold washcloths on my neck, chest and forehead b/c of the nausea.

You'll get through it!

I find it really interesting how we each perceive pain differently! I'm not sure how a first-timer could ever get an idea of how it's going to be for them based on all of our experiences since it really depends on how each individual handles pain. I didn't even go to the hospital until I was 6 cm b/c I wasn't 100% sure I was in labor--you'd think it being the second time around, I would know! Maybe enduring years of bad menstrual cramps desensitized me to the contractions?? But like I said, the pushing part HURT. I had been told that it just burns and you kinda go numb when the head is coming out, but that's total CRAP...at least for me! But here I am, planning to do it again!

I didn't feel transition. I was in pain at 5cm got a shot and just sort of dozed withgas and air to 10cm. It was surreal and it most definately hurt but cant put a time on transition unless mine was at 5cm? I found pushing the worst part. I pushed for 3 hrs until I was takem to an emergency c section. Just found out this week after 4 years I was pushing with DS facing the wall rather than down to the floor. This could be the reason. I remember my first time bearing down and thing holy crap that is an awfil feeling I cannot do it no way.

And here I am 4 years on praying I get my VBAC so although iit's bad pushing for me I need to do it. Maybe it will feel different this time?

For me, I had two totally different labors so the "worst CM" for each was very different...

With DS, I was induced and given that evil drug pitocin. The worst for me was the 3-5cm range. I was delirious and passing out from the agony before I got my epidural. Just awful, agonizing pain. I absolutely hate pitocin.

With DD, the entire labor was 2 hours - from the first contraction to her birth. It was very, very fast and intense but nowhere's near as bad as DS's. For this labor, the entire 0-10cm wasn't bad at all. I would equate the contractions to really bad menstrual cramps. Like the previous poster's comments, the worst part was the pushing. DD came out in literally one big push BUT I swear I felt my pelvis splitting in half! I let out such a scream and scared the heck out of poor DH. He totally freaked out for a second and thought I was dying, until he saw our daughter safe and sound. LOL. Afterwards, he asked me why I let out such a scream and I told him that it was because it felt like someone had a crowbar inside of me and was just cracking my pelvis in two. Fortunately, that pain was relatively quick and subsided as soon as DD was out.

yes pitocin is the devil i hated it with my son but what was worse was the prostaglandin pessary they gave me the 2nd time ... contractions were nothing i had ever felt i think they were worse than pit.
