Seeing stars

Postby bazil323 » Wed Sep 11, 2013 3:22 pm

I've been noticing that I will randomly see stars. I don't get lightheaded or black out at all, and it is totally random. Like one time it happened when I was sitting in a car for about 20 minutes and turned my head and saw stars for just a few seconds. I didn't even turn my head all that much or fast or anything. It's happened other times like that too, sometimes in the shower or just standing there or sitting there. No rhythm or reason. It doesn't happen all that often but a few times a week perhaps now. It doesn't seem to happen when I exert myself or stand up suddenly or anything like that. My blood pressure has been checking out totally normal (120s over 70s), and all my labs look great.

Anybody else see stars without any hypertension or anything?

Yes, I do! I got this even before getting pg. It happens when I turn my head too far, so the best I can figure is that there's a nerve in my neck that gets pinched, causing the stars. As far as I know, it's nothing to be concerned about.

I got this the other night in the shower. It was pretty but freaked me out a little bit too. It seemed to last for about 30 seconds and nothing seemed to trigger it. I was just standing there and bam sparkles in front of me.

I get it when I stand up or bend down and rise too quickly.its usually one or two of them. But I have had the type of stars before that relate to a spike in blood pressure when I developed pre e with dd. It was like 20-30 of them that seemed to start at the top of my vision and kept shooting downwards. Almost like falling stars. I went in after that and was admitted with high blood pressure and pre e. I had perfect blood pressure not even a few days before that and just the swelling.

If you see flashes of colour when you close your eyes/in the dark that could be the sign of a detaching retina and you need to get to a specialist immediately. The white stars are probably ok and due to pinched nerves but I just thought I'd mention the colours thing. Both my parents have experienced detached retinas and they said that was the first sign they noticed that something was seriously wrong.

Weird, didn't know that about detacbed retinas. My mom actually just had a tear in her retina where she saw black floaters.

Mine only happen for perhaps 5 seconds at the most, with eyes open, and are iridescent whitishish/colors.

I didn't mean to cause a panic ladies, so my apologies. I just thought I'd share my personal experiences on the subject because it was such a serious health incident in our family but I am not a medical expert by any stretch of the imagination! :D Best to be safe than sorry as they say! :)

That's for sure! I always like to know as much as I can, because you never know when that one little tidbit could save your life or someone else's. Like I will definitely not ignore black floaters now that my mom had them and ended up with a retinal tear. The eye doc said it was a good thing she came in when she did because they were able to repair it right away and that usually people wait until the next day hoping that it will get better overnight but by then they have scar tissue and may have vision difficulties the rest of their life from that.

I'm sure it's a lot more rare for younger people like us (my mom is 62), but it's still good to know in case someone else starts having similar symptoms, and it's always possible to have problems even as young people.
