I don't think they are very accurate at all. With my son, they measured him at 36 weeks and thought he'd would be over 9 pounds. At birth he weighed 8 pounds 11 ounces. One of my cousin's they said she'd have a 7 pound baby and he was over 10 pounds.

Ive wondered this too. At my 30 week scan, they estimated she currently weighs 3lbs 12 oz, which puts here in the 83percentile. If she gains 1/2lb a week, she will be a big 8+lb baby. One of my friends little boy was 4lb 7oz @ 30 weeks and he weighed 10+lbs at birth.

At my Hypnobirthing class last night the instructor made a point of mentioning how inaccurate ultrasounds can be for estimating the weight. She said they are commonly off by +/- 2 lbs.

I can't remember specifics but I was told that my son would be over 8lbs at birth due to an u/s and because I was a week overdue, I was terrified he would be quite large. He was born at 41 weeks weighing 7lbs 12oz.

They are not accurate at all. Please don't let a weight 'estimation' scare you into thinking you'll deliver a huge baby. And even if the baby is big, our bodies were made to birth them naturally and sussessfully. Remember, our bodies are not lemons

I have just been told that my baby is measuring over 6lb at 35 weeks and that I might have gestational diabetes. These posts have given me hope that perhaps their measurements are wrong. I have to go for a glucose test on Monday to find out if I do have GD. I hope I don't.

M doc estimated 8.5 pounds , but babe was 7.5. Granted this was not from a scan estimate, but she said their guesses are about as right or wrong as from a scan. She also said she thought one of her babies was going to be 8.5 but ended up being 10!

:) Thanks! It was awesome! I had her at home in the tub, and it went so well. I have been terrible at getting the birth story written though. I am waiting to get the labor summary from my midwife so I can get the times right. Amazing how my sense of time is just totally gone for that day!

Lovely Bazil, that sounds like such a peaceful birthing experience! Time distortion is one of the hallmarks of a great birth. :-) Can't wait to hear about your day. So many questions!!! But I'll wait until you share it with us :-) I've been practicing my hypnobirthing scripts and breathing practically every day.
I hope you're settling in to your new family life easily as well. Congratulations again!!

The day my daughter was born, they told us she was gonna be under 4 lbs. She was born less than 5 hours later and was 6lbs 5oz. She was born at 34 weeks.
