Tactless comments

Fri Feb 07, 2014 6:45 pm

We all get them, right? So I thought I'd invite others to share the tactless comments others have made to them while pregnant. I just got done visiting my relatives, and each of my grandmothers had some parting words for me.

Grandmother #1: It could be twins!
Grandmother #2: I hope everything goes well--it doesn't always, you know.

Who else has had well-meaning, tactless comments?

From my grandma when we told her baby's gender (she wanted a girl but we're having a boy) : "Oh well. We'll love him the same anyway."

Good to know, right?

From a male friend of mine and my husband - "It's gotta be a boy because you're carrying all in front and your boobs didn't blow up."

lady at work: you are going to have a hard time losing the weight in your boobs and thighs.

another lady at work: you are due next month right? (i'm due in may) when i replied that i'm due in may, she looks at my belly panicked and says, oh my! well, how much does he weigh right now. when i told her, she looks at my belly panicked again and says, well...maybe he'll come early...

thanks, ladies.

I'm lurking becuase I'm SOOOO close to third trimester...

But when my grandma found out we are having another girl, she said "well, thats OK"
Uh... yeah... your darn tootin its OK!

I dont get what peoples' obsession is with thinking a family can't be happy with only boys or only girls. I love my older daughter and will LOVE having another little girl. DH is thrilled too!

Coworker: oh, you should wear vertical stripes, not horizontal.

Me (thinking to myself): I'm just glad I have something to wear that fits me comfortably, but thanks for the fashion advice and reminding me how big I look. Geez!

"Why did you not just get a surrogate?" asked our business partner when he learned I was 16 weeks pregnant.

Omg. spirited7777, that takes the cake. I am about your age (looking at your signature) and I have had a few comments about "getting started later," as well...although no one has been as tactless as to say something like that. Although, the doctor at our nuchal screening did tell my husband that my eggs "have an expiration date." Nice. Comments like those alway blows my mind. First of all, we tried for YEARS to have this baby, so we didn't get started later. Plus, even if we had just gotten started, I don't really consider early-mid 30's later these days. Seems about average to me. AND, why do people feel like it is their right to comment on other women's timing?????

what was worse it was coming from much younger (id guess 25/26 yo) community midwife. to be fair, she wasn't QUITE that blunt, i paraphrased but she was basically going on and on about the nuchal/combined test, and how she had a lady who got a 1 in 2 chance of downs but who ended up with a non downs, so i shouldn't worry if my score comes back high risk, yada yada. like she literally spent 10 minutes talking about it and i'm like, i'm only 35 not 45, give me a break.

and yes, it does piss me off too when people think mid-30s is 'advanced maternal age'. sorry i was responsible enough to wait until i was in a secure relationship and financially secure before i started popping them out willy nilly.

and rofl at 'those eggs have an expiry date' - no sh*t sherlock. aren't we just all too painfully aware of that fact??

oh and btw, 26 yo spritely midwife is currently prego with her 2nd or 3rd, hasn't gained any weight at all apart from in her belly. no wonder she is looking down at me!!!! thankfully she'll be on maternity leave soon, hopefully i'll get a more mature replacement.

from a lady at work (I work in a hospital and work full time to this day): Your still here?

My (female) dentist said: Wow, the baby looks big

My dental hygenist said: I am just suprised you can bend like that (after asking if it was ok if I sat indian style on the chair as opposed to legs straight)
