how soon did you get pregnant after your c section

Postby Tuckersmom » Mon Sep 27, 2010 4:55 pm

I really want my kids close in age and we're not getting any younger. I am 31 and hubby is 38. he would like to be finished having all the children we can by 40.
I was told today, that it's best to wait 18 months between kids. We wanted to start trying again in 5 months in hopes we will get pregnant soon and our kids would be 15 months apart.
I am curious to hear of your experience.

I got pregnant again when dd was 16 months old. By the time I have dd2 there will be a 25 month gap between births. My ob said she likes to see at least 18 months between births, especially if you wanting to have a vbac. I am a great candidate for a vbac and am hopeful that it works out! Many doctors have their own thoughts as to what a good gap is....some think a less gap is fine and some like to see a longer gap. I think a lot of it depends on your own situation. I think 15 months between births is a perfectly fine gap and I'm sure you will be fine with that!

eta: how many times can I say gap, GAP

I was told to give my body a year to recover to get pregnant again. I never asked specifically about my c-section, because honestly, I wanted to wait at least 2 years anyways.

I hear 18mo the most, is what is recommended to wait. Csection is considered major abdominal surgery, so you need to let your body recuperate and heal. But like a PP said, especially if you want a VBAC...I've heard some say their doctors would not allow a VBAC when they got pregnant before a certain time after the section.

I got pregnant when my twins were just about 18mos, and I'm considered a good candidate for VBAC and am really hoping it works out.

I got pregnant 5 almost 6 months after my c-section. I had a great pregnancy and delivery. It increased uterine rupture by 1-2%. I have had 2 sucessful VBACS and hoping for a 3rd.

thanks for the replies so far. Mom to 10 plus, that is encouraging. my recovery has been great so far. I was back to myself after two weeks after the c section and I had a really easy pregnancy.
It may take us awhile to get pregnant again, but we definitely would like to start trying sooner than later. i would like three kids, but dh does not want anymore after 40 and is wanting a vesectomy.

so basically trying at 6 months is still safe then right? I don't care how the baby is delivered. Part of me wants to experience a vbac, but in the end I want the safest arrival for the future baby.

My OB said 18 months in between TTC, not deliveries. I told her we wanted to TTC 12 months after DS was born and she said it was still ok but that this would rule out an induction as the scar tissue would risk tearing given the strength of the contractions on pitocin. If I go into labour on my own -- then fine -- we can try VBAC.

I got pregnant for the first time when DS was 7 months. Lost that pregnancy though. I then conceived this pregnancy when he was 10 months old. He'll be 19 months when she's born. My Dr. is fine with letting me VBAC. I'll have to be monitored the whole time, but he didn't say anything about there being an even higher risk of rupture. He still quoted the 1% chance. I cannot however, be induced with cervadil or cytotec. I can have pitocin though. That's what my OB's stand is anyway.

GOOD LUCK on getting preggo again fast! It's tough when you have a LO and you're preggo, but I'm hoping it'll all be worth it when they're so close in age (and hopefully the best of friends!)

thanks for replying. I am hoping we get pregnant right away, but I am not holding my breath. It took awhile to conceive our daughter.

It took us almost 5 years of trying to get pregnant with our daughter, and when we didn't want to go on any birth control, at our 6 week pp visit, the doctor told us we should give it 18 months before getting pregnant again. I had a Vaginal delivery. My sister also had a vaginal delivery and had her 2nd daughter 16 months after the birth of her 2nd son.

I'm pregnant, and we didn't wait 18 months, I got my post partum AF cycles back on Febuary 14th (nice right??) 3 days after my daughter's first birthday. Had my second period sometime in March, and then April 23rd was the cycle I got pregnant again on.. so 3 periods between pregnancies, but they'll be almost exactly 2 years apart!. I breastfed, and that's why I had no period for a full year after delivery =)

I got pregnant with DD when DS was 8 months old. So they're 17 months apart. My Dr was open to a VBAC, but I opted for the c-section. Now I wish I had at least tried for a VBAC because my 2nd c-section experience wasn't very pleasant.

I have had pitocin for all my births except for my twins since they were my c-section. Giving pitocin for a VBAC is a no no but for me I have done very well with it. I was closely monitored. I gave birth 15 months after my c-section and was given pitocin because I just stopped contracting. My most recent birth my water broke my dr. said I was at 2-3 and not contracting after 12 hrs.. They gave me pitocin and I did very well again and went from 2-3 to complete and delivering in 2 hrs.. My water broke for both my VBACS and I'm so glad my body tolerates the pitocin. I know they closely monitored me and told me they would only go to a certain point for the dose because any more than that would be unsafe.
