Post Partum weight loss for first week

Tue Feb 15, 2011 10:10 am

Hi. I'm wondering how much weight most people lose the week after giving birth. My little man is 6 days old, and I'm down 35 pounds 8O He was a bigger baby (@10lbs) and I had a lot of water weight, but I'm still concerned that it's coming off too fast and I'm not doing well by my body.

BTW...I'm a big girl. But, I had only gained about 15 lbs from pre-pregnancy weight to reach a high of 260 lbs. Now I'm 225.

My sister lost 40 lbs the first week because she retained so much water and she wasn't fluffy at all. I lost like 15 lbs but I didn't retain any water at all and I am fluffy. I think it just depends on your body. I would only be concerned if you continue to lose weight at an exaggerated rate after another week or so has gone by. Just be sure you're eating well and drinking lots of water if you are breastfeeding otherwise you might affect your supply by not getting enough calories.

Thanks! I know I was really, really puffy, so I'm hoping that is it.

How much did you gain/loose during pregnancy? The night I had my son they said I had lost 11 pounds during the pregnancy and when I went home 5 days later I was down 27lbs from when I was in labor and delivery. I think its fairly normal especially if you retained water and then breastfeed. Like the PP said I would only be worried if it contiues to drop that fast.

I can't answer this accurately, as I didn't weigh myself until I was 11 days pp, but I lost all of my weight that I gained, I think it was like 33 pounds? I was REALLY backed up though, as in, ahem, number two. I didn't weigh myself until after I went for the first time pp, which was on day 11. I think it's normal, ESP if you are overweight to begin with (I'm still at the same weight after getting backed up for 2 weeks again, solved yesterday) I still have another 35 lbs to lose to be back to "normal" weight, but atleast 25 to be considered healthy.

I have lost most of my weight but did not gain much I think nursing has really helped. I think you should be fine maybe asks your dr if you are concerned.

I gained about 26 lbs during the pregnancy and lost almost all of that in the first few days. But then I gained a few pounds back (and my milk came in and that put on a couple pounds) so now I about 20 lbs down from pre-pregnancy and working on slowly losing the last few lbs. (I was a normal weight to start out)

Thanks ladies! I'm now down about 46 lbs 8O But it seems to be stabilizing. Now if my poor belly ever snaps back it'll be a miracle

I gained 40lbs lost 23 during the first week...by the time ds was 3months, I was back to pre preg weight. I've lost 3 more since then but it seems to be creeping back up ever since I became a sahm and have been eating a lot since the kitchen is like....right there :(
