Sleeping on Stomach

Postby franni » Fri Jun 10, 2011 5:28 am

I just found out last night that my 7 month old son has been sleeping on his stomach!!! I thought he was waking up from rolling over in his sleep, but last night after feeding him he rolled over right before my eyes to fall asleep. Is there a way to not have him do that as I know babies aren't supposed to sleep on their tummies?!!??!?

At seven months old there is nothing wrong with sleeping on their bellies. Experts will tell you that once they can roll then don't stop them from it. If it makes you feel more safe- just make sure there is nothing in the crib such as bumpers, stuffed animals etc. My son spent 10 days in the nicu where they only had him on his belly and that was the ONLY way he would sleep from day1! Talk about worry!! LOL....But no it is fine if that is the way he wants to sleep! And the belly time is awesome for their upper body development/strength.

My son is a stomach sleeper just like his daddy. I was scared at first but if he is able to roll over, i wouldnt worry about it much.

Mine has slept on his tummy from a much earlier age. He slept much better, and was able to roll tummy to back, as well as had great head control for his age. If he's on a firm surface and there aren't lots of pillows and thick blankets for him to smother on, it should be okay.

My little guy has been sleeping on his tummy since 5 months (he's 7 months now). I only put one light blanket in his crib, and he's now able to flip back and forth without any problems.
I totally understand your concern though...the first time he did it I was freaking out. I tried to flip him to his back, but like a minute later he'd be on his tummy again!

totally normal.. don't fight it.. he will probablly start sleeping better for you.. SIDS rates go down significantly after 6 months.. just don't use bumpers and pillows and stuffed animals and you are good

Yep I moved my baby to her crib at 5.5 months, and the first night she slept there I found her sound asleep on her tummy. It freaked me out! But it's just how she likes to sleep. She sleeps a lot better now that she is on her tummy.

Mine always sleeps on his tummy, and I've let him. It's actually helped his head from having a flat spot. I don't think at this point there is much to worry about! :D
