Giving up the bottle

Postby Mandy » Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:22 am

We will be over on this side after Sat. and have slowly been taking away the bottle. Leah was a slow cup learner so we have been way behind where i was with my boys at this age. When she was born she had feeding difficulties so I think this is what has always put her behind. I am trying not to let it bother me but my boys were done with their bottles at one year and I dont think we are going to be ready. I offer her the sippy cup several times first but if she is sleepy she throws it and cries and cries until I go make one :( It so sad that I do give in!! I am just trying to get some insight from all you moms that have passed this stage!

Isabel is 19 months and still has her bottles... we are trying to limit them though. She wouldn't take sippy cups for a long time. She will now but especially at night she still wants her bottle.

We're hoping to have her off bottles within the next 2 months.

i voted 12-15 months but we quit the bottle cold turkey at 12 months. The pedi was adamant that we stop the bottle immediately & that we should even go so far as to put water in the bottle & put formula in a sippy if needed. We didn't have to do this since DS gave it up pretty easy (he was down to 2 bottles per day anyway) but if you're having problems it might help to associate the "good stuff" comes from the sippy now & not the bottle.

I swicthed Ryan over before I had to go back to work, I figured it would be easier with me being able to devote a lot of attention to it. He was really easy actually. I started offering sippys at 6 months with water in them and then at 10.5 months we weaned off the bottle. I used sippys with soft spouts at first and then hard ones a few months later. We are working on getting off the sippy right now, he's actually doing it himself, wants to be a big boy so he usually drinks everything but his milk out of a cup.

I did 18+ mos, because I let Lauren self wean her nighttime bottle, and she was around 19 mos when she did that.
She was off daytime bottles around 15-16 mos.

I don't see any reason in rushing it.

My pedi said to get her off at 12 mos, so we did (I'm very compliant, lol). The earlier you do it, the easier it will be. We put it in a sippy cup and she whined for a few days, but by the 3rd day she was fine.

We quit cold turkey 1 wk before their birthday. We just started milk in sippies. They had *only* had formula in bottles, so since they weren't getting that anymore either, it didn't seem to phase either of them. Our pedi actually said 18 mos was fine, but I was ready to be done w/ them!

We're still doing bottles   . When I've tried milk in the sippy she just plays with it and doesn't drink nearly as much. But she's not attached to the bottle per se, as soon as she finishes her milk she hands me the bottle. I'd like to be done though. But with other stuff I've noticed that she gives up stuff cold turkey when she's ready, so I'm trying not to push, but still offering milk in a sippy ......

Thank you SO much for all your responses!!! It really makes me feel less pressured to see that most babies were off between a year and 15 months! We are down to our morning bottle and I am not pushing it :D She throws the cup and screams in the morning until the gets her bottle... its like having coffee to wake up I suppose. LOL We started milk full time this week because we ran out of formula and I really didnt want to buy another. LOL She is doing great though eating lots of foods and I have seen no adverse reaction to the milk so far! I also threw away all the bottles except for the one, it is so great not handwashing tons of bottles now! Thank you again!! :D
