When to switch to a toddler bed?

Postby Liza24 » Mon May 16, 2011 3:12 pm

Not that i want to do it anytime soon.

But i wonder when is a good age to transition to a toddler bed?

Connor will be 2 in sept, and is WAYYY to comfy in his crib and me too, knowing he cant get out, lol.

His room is basically a oversized closet ( less then 8x10) and fits a dresser, a changing table and crib and clothes. Were looking to move next spring when we will have the cash saved for a home.

I tried my twins at 15 months and it was a nightmare. But.....there are two of them and Finley was tormenting Gillian. If it was Gilllian alone she would have done great but Finley was getting out of her bed and climbing in with her sister and taking her pacifier, blanket, stuffed animals, basically everything and making her cry.

I guess it depends on the child. Worse comes to worse you can do what we did and try it! Lol. We only lasted a nap time and tried bed time but only lasted an hour before Dh and I were reassembling their cribs!!

My LO was 2 in March and I plan on waiting until he tries to climb out. I love knowing he is safe in his crib and am in no hurry!!

Has he tried to climb out?

We waited until Vivian climbed out EVERY time we put her in the crib. She climbed out a few times starting around 2, but if we put her in there when she was really tired she never climbed out. The beginning of April she started climbing out EVERY time we put her in there even if she was really tired. I converted her crib to a toddler and she has been doing great. She was exactly 2.5 when we converted the crib. I tried with my older kids around 18 months and this time I was waiting as long as possible and it was SO much easier.

DD is 28 months and still in her crib. We'll probably convert it to a toddler bed sometimes this summer.

we switched about 21 months and I'm glad we did it back then. I also think it wouldn't have been long before she climbed out and she slept better.

23 months here and it was a wonderful decision. He had yet to get out of his crib but we felt he was ready and we have a new baby on the way. The first nap time was stessful but after that he was great. He never gets out of bed and even in the morning will sit up in bed and just call for us and when we come in he is sitting in his bed waiting for us. It's so cute. Every once in a while if he is not super tired at nap time he will get up for a few minutes but it is always very short lived and he crawls back in bed and goes to sleep. If you do it I would suggest removing the crib from the room otherwise it is confusing to them and they want to sleep in the crib.

We converted the cot to a bed when DD was 18 months old. She was really difficult to settle into her cot but as soon as we turned it in to a bed she couldnt wait to get into bed every night for a story.

I think you just play it by ear depending on your LO. For us changing to a bed was brilliant.

We just did it this week - Benji is nearly 2 1/2 and it has been the easiest thing. He goes to bed and that is that until 7am. There has been no change to his day sleep and he doesn't even try to get out - I don't think he cares! DS1 was like this too and he was 2 1/2 as well. I like to keep them in a cot as long as I can to save the hassle of trying to 'teach' them how to stay in a bed. I think he would have stayed in there for many more months as he just saw it as his bed and never tried to climb out. I wish toilet training was as simple!
