When to switch to convertible?

Postby Chiteacher » Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:45 am

My DS is a peanut - maybe 20 lbs now at 13 months. He still comfortably fits into his Snugride 35 (and probably will for a while) but with the new baby on the way we are going to get DS a convertible and put the new baby in the Snugride.
I was just wondering at what weight / age you put your little one in a convertible? Is there a weight limit as to when I am able to do it? Of course we are going to keep him rear facing.

Thanks :)

My dd is teeny also, at 19 lbs at 22 months. she would still be comfortable in her infant carrier, but at 12 months, we switched her to a convertible to make her feel less like a baby baby, and more like a toddler.

**note: yes, she is still RF.....

We had a Snugride 32 and moved DD to a convertible a couple months ago at 17m, 31.5" ... I think she weighed about 24 lbs. I liked her infant carrier for quick in and out trips running errands, but she def fit better and has more around her in the new seat (Britax Boulevard). If you rear face, he should be at the requirements for any convertible? But just check the specs on it for RF.

We switched Joseph to the convertible at 7 months and he was probably around 28" and 20 lbs. There is no weight limit for switching from an infant seat to a convertible as long as he fits within the weight guidelines for the seat. Some people never use an infant seat and start right with a convertible. Most convertible seats go from about 5-40 or 45 lbs. Joey rides in a Sunshine Kids Radian XTSL and a Safety 1st Air Protect, still RF at 12 months, 30.5 inches and 23.5 lbs.

We moved my DD from her Chicco Keyfit30 to her Britax Boulevard 70 at 14 months, 22 lbs and 30". She was almost getting too tall for her infant seat. She was still very happy in her infant seat and would often take long naps in the carseat. It was very convenient to be able to carry her into the nursery and let her sleep. Now I have to sit in the car with the air running if I want to let her finish her nap. If your DS is happy in the infant seat, and is under the weight limit with more than 1" of shell above his head then there is no *need* to move him to a convertible. That being said, he will be just as safe in a convertible if you want to move him and many convertibles can be used from birth until boostering age. :D

We moved DD when she outgrew her infant seat at 5 1/2 months by height. Best thing I did as she hated her bucket seat.

Thanks ladies!

We never take the infant seat out of the car anymore and since we just bought our "kids car" we can get a convertible. (before DH and I would switch cars a lot and move the car seat back and forth- now he has his car and I have my car)

Now the hard part - finding the right one for us. :)
