Dropping to 1 nap.... transition

Postby babyhelstrup » Tue Jul 05, 2011 10:55 am

My LO just turned 17 months and daycare is starting to drop her first nap. They told me today that they dropped it last week. But I was still doing the 2 naps for the long weekend and she slept (I actually had to wake her up each nap) She does really good all day and can push through just fine. It is the evenings that she struggles now. Is she really ready since she is kinda crabby and tired earlier in the eve or is it just the transition? Should I put her to bed earlier, like by 7:30? She wakes up between 630-700.

How did you handle this transition? Did you let them take a loner afternoon nap during the transition? Daycare does afternoon naps from 1-3ish.

My DD is in the process of transitioning too. She isn't in daycare, so she isn't on a strict nap schedule and I don't wake her up. At this point, she takes 1 or 2 naps depending on how long she sleeps at night. It seems like she needs about 13-14 hours of sleep a day to not be a cranky mess by 5pm. She goes to bed at 7:30-8pm at night. If she wakes up early (6:30-7), then she takes a morning nap around 9-10am for about 45min-1h and an afternoon nap after lunch for about 1.5-2 hours. If she sleeps in (about 8-9am), then she only takes the after lunch nap for about 1.5-2 hours. If she doesn't take a morning nap, then I do my best to keep her awake until after 12pm, because an 11 am nap is the kiss of death around here.

I am really struggling with the nap situation. We have been back and forth for a few weeks - some days are 2 nap days, some days are 1 nap days, based on how much sleep he got the night before and what we have planned for the day. Just a few days ago the morning nap dropped to 30 minutes and he started sleeping later in the morning so we are going with 1 nap every day this week. So far it isn't going very well. By 10:30 or 11am he is exhausted, only sleeps 1-1.5 hours (if I am lucky), and then he is up for the rest of the day. He is cranky and tired by 5pm and he is asleep by 5:45/6pm and will sleep for 12+ hours. I guess he is still getting enough total sleep, but the transition has been rough. The early bedtime is nice and he is sttn so I shouldn't complain but I miss the 2 nap days.

Yes I miss the 2 naps also. She is doing better but seems that she needs 2 naps 1 or 2 days a week.
It seems that the transition takes a few weeks to start the new routine. Which makes sence because it seems to have taken forever to get the 1st routine dowon.

Yeah, that is a good point. We didn't really have a solid routine until DS was 8-9 months old 8O It took FOREVER and I never thought it would happen. Maybe this is just going to take a while. Today's nap was 30-40 minutes and he was asleep for the night at 5:30pm.

When we first transitioned at 13 months they were cranky at night. I pushed up their bedtime to 6ish and that helped.

As they got used to the 1 nap they went from a 2 hour nap to a 3 hour nap and were gradually able to handle being up later.

Now they are up around 7ish, nap from 12-3 and bed at 7:30-8.

We just followed thier lead. Somedays they were super cranky and needed a morning nap, others we were able to push though. By 15 months things were going smoothly for us.

I've been going through this transition for a few weeks now. It was the opposite for me, DS would take 2 naps at daycare and 1 at home. I let DS take the lead on this one. If he's tired in the morning I will ask if he wants a nap and if he does he will go upstairs to his room. Sometimes he gets cranky and just wants to lay in his crib for 15 mins or so. If he actually falls asleep I don't let his morning nap last longer than an hour. I consistently put him down for a 1pm afternoon nap that usually lasts anywhere from 2-3 hrs. Most days he does fine with just the afternoon nap.
