Hydrocephaly

Postby callen82 » Tue Jan 25, 2011 3:00 pm

Hey everyone!

I was on here a lot when I was pregnant with DD, but chasing around a 2 year old doesn't leave me much time on the computer anymore.

Anyways, I was hospitalized at 27 weeks with pre-term contractions that were occurring every 2-3 minutes non-stop with no cervical dilation. Still contracting, too. I was sent down to Maternal Fetal Medicine for an ultrasound and they discovered that DS has hydrocephaly. A follow-up Fetal MRI showed 15 mm in each ventricle. Thankfully they did see a corpus collosum, although it was described to me as being "thin".

Has anyone else dealt with hydrocephaly around these numbers? We aren't sure what to expect. We've been told a 30% chance of retardation and to expect some minor if not severe motor disabilities. We don't even know for sure if they will put a shunt in once he is born, which based on my previous pregnancy, might be around 36 weeks. I'm just shy of 30 right now and 50% effaced, no dilation.

Thanks!

I don't have any information but just wanted to wish you good luck. You and your baby will be in my prayers.

Just saw your post, my son was diagnosed with enlarged brain ventricles, his measured 11.5 mm on one side and 11 on the other at 28 weeks. His resolved a month later and he was born 100% fine.

Have you had further US? Have his ventricles stabilized size wise?

The last ultrasound at MFM showed that it has stabilized. We won't know an exact ventricle size until he's born (please, dear God, let it be any day now...). Hopefully we can avoid a shunt!

Fingers crossed for you! The fact that they stabilized and are not growing is good right? For me once they saw that they stopped watching him and he did not even need any special follow up when he was born, I hope that is the case for you.
