Experiences with a cerclage

Postby HawkeyeGirl18 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 2:14 pm

Just wondering what your experiences with a cerclage have been and which type you had placed. My MFM is recommending a Shirodkar because apparently it can be placed higher on the cervix and is less likely to fail. Although, I've also heard that they can be harder to remove and could mean that you have to have a c-section. :dunno:

What should I expect as far as recovery? I'm being taken off work for 7-10 days so I'm guessing that I could be pretty sore. Also, if you had a Shirodkar, were they able to remove it or did you end up having a c-section? Thanks for any info!

I had a cerclage with my first pregnancy and now this one. With my first, it was an emergency cerclage, not sure what kind, but I was put on very light activity. Had cerclage removed at 37.2 weeks and had DS 3 days later. WIth this one, I had one done at 13 weeks and everything looks great! I get regular cervix checks and neither one was painful at all. I am not on bed rest but Doc doesn't want me running a marathon either :). Hope that helps. There are lots of resources online too.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I just had mine placed this morning and so far it hasn't been that bad. Since I work as a nurse, my MFM mentioned restricting some activity between 20-34 weeks, or could take me out of work all together after 20 weeks. Hopefully, things continue to go ok.
