Ulcerative Colitis/autoimmune disorders?

Postby Sabermama » Tue Sep 04, 2012 1:49 pm

Hey everyone,

I was diagnosed with UC in early April after a flare up that started just after Christmas. I ended up having 3 blood transfusions because of severe anemia and fluids for dehydration and started a Prednisone taper from 40mg. I also started on an iron supplement and Mesalamine, which my doc and a bf consultant said isn't safe for breastfeeding or pregnancy so I had to wean my daughter suddenly.

This pregnancy was a complete surprise and my UC wasn't as well controlled as I wanted it to be when we tried for another baby. I'm off the Mesalamine and things are kinda shaky right now. I'm going to ask my doc about another low-dose Pred taper when I go in for my first appointment.

Anyone out there in a similar boat? Congrats to all of you and I hope that all of our little ones come out healthy.

Hi there! I see you posted this a while ago, but here's my story. I was diagnosed in 2002 with microscopic ulcerative colitis (clean biopsy, but disease on microscopic analysis) during a 2 month period where I lost 25 pounds. I went on mesasalamine as well, which slowly brought me into remission. I spent about 3 months in the bathroom and another 5 months recovering enough to be able to walk around the block without needing a nap when I got home. I was in remission for about 8 years, until I started to feel the symptoms returning, so I got in with a new GI specialist in the city I live in now. Had a colonoscopy done, which found that I now have severe distal ulcerative colitis. I went on ASA-5 orally and Salofalk suppositories, but once I got pregnant, I stopped the ASA-5 (which I've never been good about remembering to take once I'm feeling better!), and just take the Salofalk when I feel *ahem* crappy =)

I'm currently 24 weeks pregnant and haven't had any of my colitis symptoms, but just the usual bloating associated with pregnancy. I have even had a few bouts of constipation! I hope that you have figured out a medication protocol that keeps both you and your babe healthy. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat!

Hi there I've had uc for 8 years now and only recently got over a flare up a week before finding out I am pregnant. I'm on prednisone and mesazaline and my UC nurse said they're both fine to take during pregnancy :S (7w6d) x

I was misdiagnosed with UC about 4 years ago...

The end of 2011 I had to go to urology because I seen blood in my urine off and on and was having bladder spasms because that's what the bladder does when blood is present. It wasn't until I started seeing it and brought it to their attention that they looked back at labs and I have had it in my urine for tests for 6 months! Oncology couldn't figure it out and I had a bladder scope done because they thought I had bladder cancer. No cancer!

I got super sick with what I thought was food poisoning in April 2012. I couldn't hardly eat or drink much for an entire month... I lived off of zofran and vicodin because I was so nauseous and in pain. I had diarrhea and stomach pain for years with what I thought was UC. It wasn't until they did a CT scan they found I have Splenomegaly (enlarged spleen), Hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), and swollen mesentaric lymphnodes (swollen lymphnodes on small bowel. I was sent to to oncology because lymphoma was needing to be looked into, after tons of tests... Oncology cleared me...

2nd CT showed liver and spleen were still enlarged and aren't getting smaller. Lymphnodes in stomach growing and some the size of jaw breakers candy.

3rd CT showed everything in the 2nd CT bigger lymphnodes and a nodule on my left lung.

Onto GI... GI did lower GI scope and found I have Crohn's disease. Confirmed Crohn's with small bowel test (where you drink barium) The small bowel test was really fast because as soon and I drank the barium it flew through my digestive system and they had to hurry and get their x-ray pics done.

I have tried 6 different medication since October... none of them worked or I was allergic to them. The last option is to do Remicade infusions. I have been feeling great since getting pregnant. So knock on wood I hope I can get through pregnancy without needing Remicade...

Sorry so long but it seriously took them forever to diagnose me...

I've had chronic bowel issues ever since I hit puberty. Periodic bowel infections, daily diarrhea, terrible pain. About one year ago I went on the Atkins diet. No carbs. About four weeks into it ALL of my bowels issues disappeared. To say the least I was shocked. Turns out I'm allergic to gluten. The reason I'm bringing this up is because after a Ton of research I found out that many auto immune issues may stem from gluten allergies. Only tried and true method to finding out is excluding it from your diet for six weeks. Wishing you all good health!
