low amnotic fluid

Postby byebeautiful » Fri Jul 05, 2013 3:14 pm

i went in for a growth scan at 32 weeks expecting everything to be normal, but was quickly rushed to the hospital for 24 hour ivs. My fluid was a 6 when i left their office. When i left the hospital the next day it was a 9. 33 weeks i went in to check again and it was a 10. 34 weeks went to check and it was a 9 again. I was wondering if this means ill end up delivering early if it stays a 9? They said theyd like it above a 10 but 9 is not terribly bad.

They will most likely push for early delivery if the fluid level stays low, but you can try to increase your fluid level by drinking tons of water. Your body continually makes amniotic fluid (which is why there seems to be so much when your water breaks), so constantly replacing your fluids by drinking lots of water is best. One recommendation I saw was to take your weight and divide by two. The result is the number of ounces you should drink every day.

A lot of pregnant women get slightly dehydrated, especially in later pregnancy & in hot weather), because they don't increase their fluid intake enough, and that can result in low fluid levels. There are some other reasons, but this is the most common one and often the least talked about (they tend to jump right to the more serious ones and urge early delivery just in case).

Thank you for the info!! They did tell me it could mean something is wrong with my placenta but in the ultrasounds my placenta has been looking good. I have been trying to stay out of the heat and drink as muh as I can. I get weekly scans so hopefully it goes up more.
