How long should I take my prenatal?

Postby anna62 » Sat May 28, 2011 9:57 am

Hi all,

I am 13w3d and am really struggling with morning (all day) sickness which gets worse once I have taken my prenatal tablet. I've tried changing from a sanatogen tablet to a boots brand and it still makes me feel very sick once I've taken it. I didn't take it this week because I have been sick every night since I turned 8 weeks and I lost 10lbs pretty fast. I haven't been ill this week but I feel that I should be taking the tablets still. Does anyone have any advice on how long I should be taking my prenatal tablet?

Thanks in advance!

Anna.

I'm just lurking, but when I was pregnant with DD my dr said everyday. However, I had a friend who's prenatels made her sick, so she was told to chew two flinstone vits a day. I'm sure it's different for multipules, though

I had that issue with sickness after taking prenatals as well. My dr told me Flintstones chewables as well and gave me a script for iron supplements (I was anemic though so not sure if thats why). Prenantals should be taken once a day. My doctor told me they were mainly for the mom(and of course if the babies required more) as the babies will take whatever vitamins you have in your system and you will be left without.

I would let your ob know they make you very sick. He/she may give you an alternative you can take.

Thank you for your advice! I can't get flintstone's in the uk but I'm going to see what alternatives I can find tomorrow! I will also give my midwife a ring and see what they suggest! Thank you again!

Its very important to take your prenatals....1 baby takes a lot from you, but multiples take even more! Your body really needs the extra supplements to stay healthy and be able to provide everything you need for your own health and the health of your babies.

If they are making you sick I would ask your doc about what they suggest. They may have a prenatal that is easier to take or may even prescribe you anti-nausea meds to help.

Ask your doc for a milder one. Make sure you take it with a little fat. It will help. Hang in there! I had super bad m/s the entire pregnancy. I took a zofran and waited about 20 mins then took the prenatal AT NIGHT.

I will talk to my doctor but I know they wont give me any anti nausea meds because they only do that over here in the u.k if you are being sick all day long, they don't think that being nauseous and not being able to eat is a good enough reason! Also the guidelines over here are different to those in the u.s, here they tell you to stop taking prenatals after 12 weeks but it seems that all the american people I have spoken to say your meant to take it all the way through pregnancy and during breastfeeding. I will talk to my doc and see what he says! Thank you!

I know I am bad but I almost never took my pre-natals with either pregnancy. They made me SO sick I couldn't stand it.
