Freaking out a little.....

Postby hazelbazel » Thu Mar 21, 2013 9:13 pm

OK so tonight I noticed that my ankle swelling is actually pitting. In other words if you put your finger on it and press the indentation stays. Its called pitting edema and is generally not a good thing... well especially not at this stage of pregnancy. i had it with both of my other pregnancies but not until the end. My fingers are also feeling quite swollen. It can be a sign of pre-e or a sign that pre-e will be coming. Aurgh. I wish I hadn't consulted Dr Google. Guess I'm calling the doc tomorrow and going to check my BP at CVS tomorrow too. Anyone else have that type of swelling this early?

With my first twin pregnancy I started getting bad swelling around 22 weeks. so much around my legs and knees that it was a bit painful to bend at the knee. try to stay hydrated and elevate your feet as much as possible. you also might want to invest in some compression stockings. they really do help and its better if you start now than if you wait too late and the swelling is just too terrible.

Good luck. Dr Google is evil!!! Just remember that while it can be a sign of pre-e, it can also happen without pre-e. And pre-e can happen without any signs (like it did to me!). Just take care of yourself and stay off your feet :)

My swelling started around 18-20 weeks. I didn't have pitting edema but it was pretty unpleasant. Like Cathy said, staying hydrated and keeping your feet up helps but unfortunately it's not likely to go away until you deliver. If you're concerned about high BP or pre-e, I suggest investing in a BP cuff that you can keep with you and check your pressure at any time. I bought one post-pregnancy because my BP was still elevated for around $40 at Walgreens.

I started swelling early but had no pre-e signs at all until suddenly my BP was high, I had protein in my urine and then my water broke. Up until a week before I delivered everything was fairly normal. I had no idea my BP was so high, I never even had any symptoms of it.

I hope it's not pre-e developing already!

I don't know what to think. At cvs this morning my pressure was 140/high 80s.that's super high for me. I them went to my ymca to check it and out was 120s/70s. Now i understand bp changes all the time but now I'm totally confused. I called the doc and they are calling me back. I'd prefer they just check me...but we will see. Will keep you posted.

Well doc didn't feel a need to see me....so I'll just monitor my bp this weekend and see how it goes. I have an appt next Fri so they'll check me then. In the meantime I'm still a little nervous...but I'll just hang in there.

I know my BP can change quite a bit within a day. We have a home BP machine for my MIL who lives with us, and now that I started checking mine I have noticed that it's pretty different from one day to the next. You may want to get one for home since it will be easier then running (or waddling as I am beginning to do) to CVS all the time for the piece of mind you need.

Oh, and I second the post on compression socks. I started to get some pretty bad swelling about a month ago and they really help. I just ordered some on amazon in black so I can wear them to work and they look like normal knee high socks.

I have really bad swelling with all kinds of pitting and no pre-e. Mine started a month ago. My BP has started to climb a bit, but nothing that's concerning the docs. I will second or third the compression stockings idea. My doc gave me a script as an afterthought and I didn't get them and wish I had. She did say to make sure to get the ones you need a script for that they have to measure you for and go all the way up to your waist (they make maternity ones). You don't want to cut off your legs at any point with an elastic band.

Thanks guys. I'll talk with them about the compression stockings at my next appt. Oh and also, I have a home BP monitor but it's old so I dunno if I can trust it completely, I'll probably get a new one. Anyway it is giving me a wide variety of readings, anything from 116/60 to 140/80's. Time to get a new one I think.

I swelled badly with BOTH pregnancies. Always pitting edema. Keep your legs elevated when you can, don't eat any sodium (salt) if you can avoid it. Definitely contact your doc to make sure you're not pre-e, but in the mean time ELEVATE!

Ditto what Robin said!!

Elevate elevate elevate!

I also sleep with pillows under my feet when I'm on my side, that has helped a lot.

Try not to worry about developing something more serious right now..just keep an eye on your BP, make sure they check your urine frequently, and try and rest and relax as much as you can.

You can do it!! :)

Just something for people in the future: When you take your bp, always be sitting, and do try and rest before you take it. A lot of times, people will take their blood pressure after doing activities such as walking, or running around - this can affect the reading. Stress can also affect the reading.

So if you get a high bp number, take a load off - put your feet up, and then try again in like 20 minutes. You will be pleasantly surprised most times by how much it will come down once you relax. However if it is again too high, that's a sign that maybe you should go in! :) Good luck

my legs and ankles do that and the doctor just calls it swelling, nothing wrong with me or babies, and no sign of pre-e.
