high blood pressure ? pre e?

Postby hazelbazel » Wed Jun 12, 2013 7:00 pm

Hey ladies. Well here's my latest question. So my swelling seemed to take on a whole new level today. My feet are so swollen i have 2 rolls each on them. I couldn't even get them into my flip flops. And my hands were so swollen today i could barely bend them or use them. I was trying to open zip lock bag and just couldn't get a grip. Anyway, tonight it dawned on me that i should check my blood pressure. Long story short i found that while laying down its low. Sitting up it varies from 130~150/80+90s, and as soon as i stand up it goes up to 150s/90s. It does this consistently. I'm so confused. I plan to call doc tomorrow but just wanted to see if any of you have any insight. Oh, and as of Monday i didn't have any protein in my urine.

I would definitely call. In normal circumstances most people's blood pressure dips a little with transition to standing so that in itself is not right.

They told me at the doctors office that the blood pressure should be taken while sitting up, that's probably your more accurate reading.

Most definitely call. My BP that made them say "you aren't leaving til those babies are born" was 154/110. Higher than your standing one, but not by too much. Just be careful, I had no swelling, headaches or any symptoms other than sky high BP and I had severe pre-e. Of course, I'm sure you don't as your BP is better while sitting but it's something to take seriously. Good luck!!

thanks everyone. Maybe i should have called? But when i got up today my bp was fine....in all positions and again this afternoon was fine. I hate to call yet again... I dunno though. The swelling its really bad now. Maybe i should just call tomorrow before the weekend to be safe.... I just wish something was clear these days! So tired of guessing!

Yikes Hazel! I didn't have protein in my urine either but when my BP was around 150/90 with my first DS, I was induced the next morning. Definitely something to have checked out ASAP.

Thanks baby luv. You are sweet to think of me. I did go in and per the usual with my doctor they didn't flinch. Pressures were reading 140s/80s while i was there, but i only had trace protein in my urine and all my blood work came back normal. So they said its nothing to nee concerned about at those point. I dunno though??? Should i get another opinion? does this sound reasonable to you guys?

I only have my experience to go by and I don't know much about pre-e other than what I went through, but my doctors were VERY concerned and I only had high BP, no swelling/headaches. Mine could have been a bigger deal as I was much earlier than you were (mid-28 weeks when I went to that appointment). My initial proteins were in the mild pre-e range, but by the end of the 24 hour collection they were definitely in severe range.

I would say if your doc isn't concerned and you trust him/her, then just keep an eye on it. But if you feel uneasy about it, ask around to other docs. Pre-e is not something to mess around with, for you or the babies. If their cords are still having good flow, things are probably fine. Once mine started losing diastolic (I think that's the terminology?) the docs moved into high gear.

Sorry I'm probably not much help with pre-e since I have no experience with it. I did just want to note though that I think with blood pressure the bottom number being high seems to be a bigger concern with my MIL's blood pressure. So maybe since your bottom # was in the 80's that is why they weren't concerned?

I think Shelly's right, as long as the bottom number (diastolic) is ok, they won't be as worried. I'd keep a close eye on it though and try to stay as rested and hydrated as you can. I do think your OB (or OBs) are a little too relaxed for my comfort level. Trust your gut and if something doesn't feel right, by all means, ask for another opinion!

I disagree.... Both top and bottom numbers are important in a blood pressure. I looked around a bit and it seems like youR really close to mild pre-e diagnosis criteria. Did they at lEast tell you to monitor at home or come in more often? I can't remember.... Are you taking procardia for contractions?

Thank you all for your input. It means a lot to me. I made my husband get online last night and do some research to see what he thinks. He also thinks I'm borderline pre e. I'm moniotoring my bp throughg out the day and watching my symptoms. I woke up with a headache today and that worried me but my bp was the same not increased. Now the headache is gone. I won't hesitate to call and go in if I need to. I hqave an appt on mon too. I'll keep you all postEd.
