12 Week Ultrasound

Postby Bailierae » Thu Aug 01, 2013 6:44 am

Hey Ladies! I haven't posted in here in a while but hoping I can start again and that ok with all of you.

I had my 12 week scan yesterday, I was actually 11w6d

Baby A measured 12w2d and was moving its hands and feet and lifting its lil bum in the air
Baby B measured 12w4d and was just hanging out

I asked my doctor about cervical changes and preterm labor and he stated that cerclages weren't proven to help in twin pregnancies only singletons and also basically if there is preterm labor signs like shortened cervix or anything there's nothing really to do as bed rest isn't proven to help either. What are your thoughts on this? Did you discuss this stuff with your doctor as well? Also, I asked about extra monitoring and he said no since they weren't identical. I know identical twins need extra monitoring but I thought fraternal do also to a point and obviously not as much as identical twins. Sorry for the novel just wondering if this is normal or If I should be concerned.

Here's my ultrasound pics & one last question. If your babies measured ahead at this point did you change your ticker or just leave it as it?

Welcome back. Post away. I love seeing all the new twin pregnancies. IMO I would look for another Dr. I think every twin pregnancy is high risk. I had a rather smooth sailing twin pregnancy and still saw a specialist. My regular OB Dr put me on bedrest at 31 wks after pre term labor from a stomach bug, but she was going to put me on bedrest at 32 wks regardless. I think you need a dr who understands how difficult a twin pregnancy is and all the complications that can happen because of it. I'd rather have a dr that is proactive instead of one that just seems to want to wait and see if something happens. I was big on the what ifs! I think I went in to my first appointment asking all the possibility questions because they were all very real!

Do you have to have a referal with your insurance? If not I would see one on my own.

Hi! I didn't have extra monitoring with my OB (that I recall) but I did also see a perinatologist/MFM. So I had the regular monthly visits at the OB, then I had monthly growth scans at the MFM. I was just about to switch to twice a month and twice a month when I ended up developing pre-e and having my boys. When it came down to my pre-e, it was the MFM who monitored me and pulled the trigger to send me for the c-section; it was my OB who delivered the boys. I liked having a team of docs all working together.

And congrats on a good scan, I loved my NT scan at 12 weeks. It was the first time they really looked like little people!!

I too saw a high risk specialist (perinatologist) simply due to being pregnant with twins. Although they didn't officially do anything "extra"... they did do ultrasounds at each and every appointment, even when I went multiple times a week. I'm not sure if the regular OB does this with twins, but they certainly did. Also, I went on to develop gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension and felt more comfortable being with the high risk group. My docs turned out to disappoint me a bit through the process but in retrospect the nurses were amazing and they were the ones who really helped me through it. And that's the other thing, the support staff at a perinatologist group will be more highly trained in general (in my experience that is). So all in all, I'm happy that I went to the high risk group. They did seem to have mercy on me due to my serious twin discomforts and ailments, and even induced me at 37 + 3.

All the best to you! And congrats on your pregnancy!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I agree with the others that you may want to find a new OB. Any twin pregnancy is high risk. My first OB appointment, he immediately referred me to a MFM. I saw my regular OB for regular pregnancy checkups and I saw the MFM for additional monitoring on the baby. Just because your twins are di/di doesn't mean you're not as high risk. My MFM did a cervix check at every visit and did detailed checks of the babies. I had a fairly uneventful pregnancy until I developed pre-e around 32 weeks. It was my MFM who put me on bedrest and my OB who delivered the babies. I felt very well taken care of with both doctors watching over me.

Thanks for your replies I really appreciate it! That's what I was thinking. The crappy thing is I really like my doctor he just seemed so non shilant about it being twins which really sucked. I think I'm going to ask for a referral to see a MFM and hopefully he will give me one. If not, I think I will get a second opinion or maybe call their office and see if I need a referral.

First, congrats on your twin pregnancy!! Secondly, I agree with everyone else here, I had a "regular (non-complicated)" twin pregnancy at the beginning but I was also referred to a MFM at my first OB appointment. I had monthly appointments with my OB and monthly growth scans with the MFM until the end where I was seeing them both much more often. The MFM only deals with high risk pregnancies so they have a lot of experience with all the stuff that goes on in a twin pregnancy- and NO... it isn't just like a single pregnancy but you get two babies at the end!!!

The comment about how bed rest isn't proven to help kind of scares me. I have read that also, but it kind of seems like a textbook answer, not something that a doctor experienced with twin pregnancies would say. It sure seems like a lot of us on here spent some amount of time at the end on bed rest, and I know in my case it helped me keep the babies in an extra 3 weeks.

Welcome back and great U/S pics! Sounds like everything is going well with you and the babes :)

As far as MFM and extra monitoring, I guess I am the odd one out. I knew all the complications with multiples and was VERY reserved until 24 weeks, but I never really dwelled on any of it nor pushed my doc. I saw my regular OB the entire pregnancy, never saw an MFM, had the same monitoring as a singleton until about 28 weeks when I started going more frequently like a later term mom would. I did have to get BPPs from 28 weeks on every week, but that was about the only difference.

I asked my doc after we found out it was twins what would be different and he told me that I'd be seen more frequently and monitored a little more closely at the end, but other than that we'd play it by ear. I did ask if I would have to quit working or go on bedrest or stop exercising and he told me only if I felt I had to and he'd let me know if he felt it was an issue. For me, I trusted my doc - he'd delivered my son, and twins aren't that uncommon anymore.

I know many ladies are apprehensive and would rather take every precaution, and it's always been my belief to be better safe than sorry. If you feel you need more monitoring and would like to be followed by an MFM, then do it! it's your peace of mind and that's nothing to take lightly!

Also, he's wrong if he told you nothing is needed because they aren't identical - they could be identical they are just di-di. It's too early too tell :)
