Progesterone Injections

Postby MommyToOne+2 » Sun Aug 25, 2013 5:33 pm

At my NT Scan my MFM mentioned doing weekly progesterone injections. He said it's not proven effective with twin pregnancies but it wouldn't hurt. Has anyone else done them? I did daily PIO during the first 7 weeks so I'm not worried about the actual shot. Just curious if anyone else did them and how long you carried your twins. My MFM seems to be concerned I won't carry these babies to 35w like I did with my other twins. My OB on the other hand acts like I will carry them longer. My MFM and OB are totally opposite though, my MFM is much more cautious and my OB is very lax about everything.

I did 17p shots starting at 16 weeks through 35 weeks. I had a history of a preterm singleton. I carried my twins to induction at 38+1 despite 9 weeks of preterm labor and bedrest!!

Unless your doctor seems it to be medically necessary, I wouldn't do injections that long. There are progesterone suppositories that are just as effective. I've always stopped my PIO injections around 11 weeks with my pregnancies.

I did the 17p injections with my singleton. While it's true that they haven't been proven to be effective with multiple pregnancies, they still might provide some benefit for you if you have risk factors for pre-term delivery. I was put on them in combination with a cerclage to help prevent my cervix from shortening and keep my uterus quiet. However, they aren't entirely without risk. My MFM told me that they do increase the chances of developing gestational diabetes. You might want to ask to your MFM about all of the potential risks and benefits before you make a decision.

Thank you ladies!

I definitely ask about risks. I go back at 19w so we will decide then. I want to do anything possible to bake these babies as long as I can.

:hi: I'm confused. you carried your other set of twins to 35 weeks, why doesn't your doctor think you will carry these to the same, or longer?

the placenta provides sufficient progesterone to sustain the pregnancy, does the dr think yours won't provide enough?

He told me I'm higher risk with a 2nd set of twins. I'm going to ask more questions at my a/s.

really? I've never heard of that. wonder if anyone else here has heard of that. I don't recall any of my doctors mentioning that I was higher risk with my second set, they were fraternal, so we were so much more relaxed than with the first set, it was a wonderful pregnancy. I wonder if he is talking about the risk of rupture? are you planning on a vaginal delivery?

It must be just his opinion that a second set is higher risk. I don't want to be rude, but is your age a factor? I had my 2nd set at 42 and I did better with than one than when I was younger, go figure.

I'm no doctor but I don't see why a second set is higher risk than a first, and I still don't see any reason for extra progesterone. your placenta should be making a sufficient amount to sustain the pregnancy unless you have some other issues not mentioned. I hope you get some answers, please kup!

I'll be 30 when I deliver. I turn 30 in Jan. I have no other issues. He seemed concerned bc of PROM last time. He didn't push it, just mentioned it and said we could discuss later. I love my MFM and totally trust him but won't do anything I'm not sure of. My last set was fraternal and so is this one so I feel good about that. I Judy don't want these babies coming earlier than 35w.

oh ok because of PROM. Did that happen at 35 weeks? that's still pretty good for twins since they consider full term for twins at 36 weeks. I didn't think that progesterone would prevent that. but its worth researching.
