Gaining Weight Quickly

Postby coleyhay » Fri Sep 06, 2013 12:15 pm

I 21 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins and have gained close to 30 pounds already. The thing is, I eat clean and healthy and workout 6 days a week so it's not like I've been pigging out or anything. My only thought is maybe because I lost a lot of weight this year prior to getting pregnant maybe that's why my body gained so much this quickly? Is anyone else in the same boat?

I gained 28lbs with my first twin pregnancy and at 12w I had lost 4lbs but I did all of my gaining towards the end last time. I'm sure I will blow up before long. I've been so nauseated that I haven't had an appetite but when it comes back I'll start pigging out!

I gained 80 total. It was my 3rdc pregnancy and I tend to gain s lot with my pregnancies. ... 50 plus with my first 2 single pregnancies. I gained about 50 the last half of my twin pregnancy... and now 8 weeks post partum I've lost about 45 of it. My babies were good size twins. ... 6lbs 4ozs and 7lbs s 7 ozs. I guess my point is don't stress to much. ... it'll come off and your body is probably just doing what it needs to to support those babies!

I think the early weight gain is good. I lost 8 lbs during my first tri due to being so sick and by 21 weeks (when I found out I had twins) I was only up 4 lbs from my pre-preg weight. That was a huge concern from my doctor, especially because my babies share a placenta. So I got put on a super high protein diet and was told I needed to be gaining 2-3 lbs per week. I was told that early weight gain is good predictor of the babies' birth weight. So I ate and ate and now I'm up 40 lbs at 35 weeks and my babies are still small but doing great. So I say good for you and don't worry about it!

That is really good!!!! You want to gain at LEAST 25 with twins by 24 weeks because twins are usually born early and you need that early weight gain. I gained 40 altogether but now I'm stuck in the hospital and losing muscle and not eating as much as I should. I was on track for 60lb weight gain. Your body gains what it needs to. Remember, two babies in there. Don't even worry about weight.

I agree with PP - early weight gain is good when pregnant with multiples! Once you hit the third tri you'll likely have trouble gaining any more because you won't have room in your stomach and your babies will be sucking you dry of all you've got! lol I gained about 70 pounds with my twins - about half of that was water weight, but the majority of the rest I put on before 28 weeks. At 32 weeks I was diagnosed with GD and had to go on a strict diet and I think I would have been losing weight had I not been putting on water weight.

ETA - I'm not sure how, (I think it was the GD diet) but at 5 months PP, I'm now 15 pounds lighter than I was before I got pregnant.

They told me to gain 20lbs by 20 weeks. In the beginning I wasn't gaining much but I most definitely surpassed the 20lbs by 20 weeks. I only made it a month into the 3rd tri but my weight gain never really slowed. I gained a total of 60lbs in 33 weeks. One month I gained a whopping 11 lbs! 8O My OB never said anything and I was very swollen from about 18 weeks on. My preemies were 3lbs13oz and 3lbs10oz at 33 weeks so they were a decent size and they're doing very well today. It took me a while to lose all my baby weight though. I lost 28 in the hospital but it took until they were about 10 or 11 months old before I lost all of it. To be fair though, I didn't try very hard the whole time and they were 10 months old before I even started exercising. Kudos to you for exercising so much this pregnancy. I didn't exercise at all while pregnant. I just couldn't.

I feel I should add that I was also 15lbs heavy when I got pregnant and today I am a whopping 77lbs lighter than I was the day I delivered.

I'm starting to worry I'm not gaining. At 16w I had gained 3lbs but I weighed myself this morning (18w) and I'm down 5lbs in 2 weeks....I'm eating just not a lot. I don't have much of an appetite and I'm trying to eat healthy...I'm not overweight, I know that it's common for women who are overweight to lose instead of gain but I'm about average for my height. I have my anatomy scan Monday...I'm curious to see what my MFM has to say.

I started swelling around that time and my MFM told me, it sucks and there's not much you can do about it. As long as your BP is fine and there's on protein in your urine then it's just an unfortunate symptom of being pregnant. It was around that time I had to stop wearing my wedding ring and buy flat shoes a size bigger. I bought a little stool to prop my feet up during the day at work and I drank a LOT of water. Some women say compression hose helped but I never tried that.

I'm going to guess that chasing after twin toddlers is probably keeping your weight down. I'd definitely bring it up Monday but typically the babies take their nutrition first and then you get yours. If the babies are growing properly then I think you're probably OK. KUP though!
