Progesterone, metformin, or baby aspirin?

Postby Menehune » Wed Oct 16, 2013 7:44 pm

Hi ladies, my doc told me to continue progesterone suppositories until 32 weeks to support my twins. He also wants me to continue metformin until 32 weeks to prevent miscarriage and gestational diabetes (i have pcos). I'm also staying on baby aspirin I think to prevent blood clots.

Has anyone been on a similar regimen for any/all of the above?

I'm no help, I just wanted to say Congrats!

I did PIO injections until 6w and progesterone suppositories until 10w. My MFM had mentioned weekly progesterone injections but hasn't mentioned it any more so I guess he doesn't want me doing it. I don't figure it could hurt anything to continue them!

I was on Metformin until 7 weeks when we saw heartbeats, then progesterone suppositories until 12 weeks (tho doc said I could go off at 10 but I had leftovers so I weaned off until 12 when I was more comfortable doing it). Never did baby aspirin.

Is there a reason you would take them so long? Placentas generally start making enough progesterone to sustain a pg by 10-12 weeks, unless you have a reasons yours isn't. And the Metformin was giving me horrendous gas pains (which sounds funny, but was insanely painful and nearly debilitating!!) so I got off that the second the doc gave me the ok. Like that day.

Hi ladies! Thanks for your responses! I should also add that my RE is uber conservative. He said he usually keeps his twin moms on progesterone for added support. It just seems like a long time. I'm gonna ask my perinatologist at our appointment next week. I did have my progesterone levels checked at 6 weeks (I was still on PIO at the time) and it was 99, which I think is super high.

For the metformin, I'm worried that I will have a hard time gaining the weight i need to as it dulls my appetite. However, avoiding gestational diabetes would be nice too.

I'll ask the perinatologist all of these things, but I know I'll get conflicting answers! I suspect I'll have to make my own decision, which seems weird when it comes to medicine!

Thanks again for your responses!

I was! I was on metformin, progesterone, baby aspirin, and lovenox injections. I have PCOS and 2 copies of Mthfr so I was on that same crazy cocktail. I stopped the metformin at 20 weeks though and the progesterone around 16 weeks. I was on lockbox until 30 weeks I think and baby aspirin until the day I delivered. It was odd being on all kinds of things but it totally saved my children's lives! I would have lost both both of them without it!

Michelle, thank you for your success story! Just what I needed to hear! Was the met to reduce miscarriage and gestational diabetes risks?
