Swelling

Postby HawkeyeGirl18 » Tue Feb 04, 2014 8:16 am

When did you start to notice this becoming a problem? With my son, I had some swelling in my lower legs and feet if I was up walking around a lot, but it seemed like it was well into my third trimester and pretty close to the end of my pregnancy that it started.

With this twin pregnancy, I noticed that not only to my lower legs and feet start to swell when I'm up doing a lot during the day, but my hands have been too. It's not bad, but definitely noticeable. I had a brief moment of panic over the weekend when I thought that my rings were going to be stuck on my fingers. The swelling in my hands had also triggered some carpal tunnel symptoms that are especially bad in the morning.

I'm only 19 weeks, so it seemed a bit early for this and I'm worried because I'm at risk for pre-eclampsia since I already have chronic high blood pressure (although it's been very well controlled) and had blood pressure problems towards the last few weeks of my son's pregnancy. I already have a routine appointment with my OB this Friday, but was just curious to see what some other twin moms experienced.

Hi Hawkeye,

Yes! I also have swelling of my hands and feet, but my hands are more uncomfortable. I think I had to stop wearing my wedding ring at around 16-18 weeks because it was getting too snug. Now, my hands almost always feel crampy/achy, and I'm starting to get really clumsy and am losing my fine motor skills. I couldn't zip up my own dress this morning because I couldn't grip the zipper :( . Every time that I wash my hands with cold water it feels really soothing. My blood pressure has been OK...but I also have to re-take my glucose challenge test (I think gestational diabetes can also cause swelling of the hands and feet).

My doc told me that I'll experience a lot of symptoms much earlier than a singleton pregnancy, so that's what I'm assuming for now! I think as long as you let your doc know, and you keep an eye out for other pre-e or other symptoms, you're OK.

I'm trying to drink lots of water and watch my salt and sugar intake. Monitoring my salts is hard because there's already so much in a lot of food (esp prepared foods).

Hang in there! Just wanted to let you know you're not alone...glad that I'm not either! :D

Best,
M

Thank you for sharing! It is nice to know that I'm not alone and that it might be more of a discomfort but not always a sign of a bigger problem.

My swelling with the twins started around then too. I have pictures of my feet that looked like blown up blimps. My blood pressure and everything was always fine. I couldn't wear my wedding ring from like 25 wks on or something like that. Then it took forever after for my swelling to go away too. That was also due to having a c-section. Just mention it to your dr and they will let you know if they are concerned.

Yep mine started early too - probably around 18-19 weeks and it sucked. By 20ish weeks I couldn't wear my wedding ring anymore. I didn't develop issues with my BP or pre-e until around 32 weeks so for the rest of that time it was just swelling. Just make sure to drink lots of water and keep your feet up. Once it starts it doesn't really go away till the end. DH bought me a little stool to prop my feet up during the day at work. At home I tried to just lay around and rest as much as possible.

I remember sitting in classes at the hospital at 30+ weeks and my feet were so fat then it was ridiculous. It did go down not long after delivery though! I remember laying in my hospital bed marveling at how skinny my feet looked.
