How long did you work?

Postby Menehune » Wed Feb 05, 2014 4:03 pm

Twin moms, just curious of how long you continued working in your pregnancy. I'm at 26 wks + 3 days now, but my back is killing me at my desk job (I've tried massage, chiropractic medicine, pillows, etc.). I think I'm just getting that nesting feeling and don't want to be at work much longer. I know the decision is ultimately up to me, but I just wanted to poll...so...

A few questions for you all...

When did you stop working?:
When did you deliver your twins?:
Did your twins require NICU time?:
What kind of job did you have (e.g. office/desk job, lots of standing, etc.)?:
What was your doctor's recommendation?:
Do you have any regrets regarding how long you decided to work (e.g. wish you stopped working sooner, regret less pay or less maternity leave, etc.)?:

Thanks very much!

Good questions. I'm almost 32 weeks and really starting to feel done. It's hard for me to pull the plug because I'm a teacher and there are a lot of people relying on me. Looking forward to getting feedback from other moms.

When did you stop working?: I started cutting my hours around 28 weeks and stopped working at 32 weeks
When did you deliver your twins?: 33 weeks exactly
Did your twins require NICU time?: yes, they stayed for 19 days
What kind of job did you have (e.g. office/desk job, lots of standing, etc.)?: office desk job, with a 30-40 minute commute which got really awful toward the end
What was your doctor's recommendation?: he left it up to me
Do you have any regrets regarding how long you decided to work (e.g. wish you stopped working sooner, regret less pay or less maternity leave, etc.)?: yes, I wish I'd have stopped working sooner

Just to throw in some additional info, I'm a CPA and was pregnant for tax season. We had just started the company a couple of months before I got pregnant so I worked my ass off working crazy long hours. I was around 24 weeks when April 15th rolled around and I was still feeling pretty good but by 28 weeks I felt like I had hit a wall and I felt like crap. I kept showing up for work later and later in the mornings because it just took me so long to get up and moving every morning. And I would leave early every day too. I developed pre-e right around 32 weeks, right when I had decided to start working from home. By the time I was officially diagnosed I was 32w6d. I was put on bedrest and told I'd deliver by 37 weeks. I went home and my water broke that night. I delivered my girls the next morning.

I don't know if me stopping work sooner would have made any difference, but I feel like if I'd have listened to my body and been less stubborn maybe I'd have stayed pregnant a little longer.

ETA - My girls spent not quite 3 weeks in the NICU and I stayed home with them for 8 weeks after they came home. So I stayed home just shy of 12 weeks. Those first few months working with twins at home was hard, but once they were STTN things really started getting a lot easier.

Cassidy, thank you so much for your feedback! I'm thinking of reducing my hours starting next week, but I'm also doing the bean counting thing with paid vs. unpaid leave. I'm trying to get over that and just do what's best for the twins. The crazy thing is, I know I still have a lot of growth ahead of me, so if I'm already uncomfortable, well...yikes! I had a rough night last night and was late into the office this AM, so it seems my body is telling me to slow down.

Thanks again for your response!

Well, I couldn't physically take it anymore. I made it to 33w3d. I'm a teacher, so I'm actually still doing report cards but at least I'm at home. Just hit 34 weeks today, and I'd really like to keep then in 2 more weeks to avoid nicu but after that, they can come anytime. My body feels done.

Laura, 34 weeks is a great milestone achievement! Congrats! I'm hoping to work until 32 weeks, but have begun to shorten my days if I'm struggling. I have carpal tunnels in my hands from swelling so writing and computer work (essentials in my office job) is making things frustrating, so we'll see! My OB said that it will get worse after delivery w breast feeding :|

Hang in there & keep us updated!

I worked until 28 weeks my first twin pregnancy. I had a desk job and it killed my back plus I had awful swelling and morning sickness lasted the whole pregnancy. I wish I had stopped working earlier. I delivered at 35w and my twins were in the nicu for 10 days.

My 2nd twin pregnancy I am a SAHM so no time off for me. I delivered at 37w2d and we went home the next day.

I think 28-30 weeks is a good time to cut back on work. Try to rest the last few weeks.

I am a nurse in labor and delivery so I am on my feet for 12 hrs. I worked till 35+5 and delivered 35+6. I would NOT recommend doing that! It was awful. If I could have stopped working sooner I would have. Thankfully my BP was ok so I could physically do it. I actually slept great at night towards the end because I was so exhausted :)

When did you stop working?: 28 weeks. I went into labor while at work.

When did you deliver your twins?:36 weeks. I was in the hospital for 6 weeks and dialated to 4cm.

Did your twins require NICU time?: No

What kind of job did you have (e.g. office/desk job, lots of standing, etc.)?: Dental work. On my feet all day.

What was your doctor's recommendation?: between 28 to 32 weeks. But of course I didn't get a choice because I went into labor.

Do you have any regrets regarding how long you decided to work (e.g. wish you stopped working sooner, regret less pay or less maternity leave, etc.)?: I had a very rocky start to the pregnancy. Lots of bleeding. I shouldn't have gone back to work after I had all that bleeding at 10 weeks. I should have listened to my body at 26 weeks because I was having a hard time at work. The day before I went into labor I couldn't walk around the office. I had to lean on walls just to get around. I had 3 strong contractions within 3 hours and I went to the hospital and found out I was contracting every 2 minutes and dialated to 2cm. 30 minutes later I was dialated to 3cm. Praise God we got labor to stop but it was nothing short of a miracle and I shouldn't have tried to push my body at work when it was at its limit.

Thanks, Megan, Melissa, and Mommytoone+2!

Today is my last day at work! I'll be 32 weeks on Sunday. I have carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands due to swelling, so I wear wrist guards that make computer work difficult. I haven't been comfortable sitting at my desk since about 20 weeks. I'm glad to have made it this far, and hoping to incubate these babies until at least 34/35 weeks. However, I might go mad if I incubate them until 38 weeks! I've been feeling some braxton hicks, but nothing alarming, so that's good!

I have some "nesting" activities planned at home, but I know it will be a challenge to stay mobile. Any tips are welcome!

Best,
M

I'm glad I saw this post because I recently started wondering the same thing. I'm 25 weeks today and work as a nurse practitioner, so I spend time on my feet and at a desk. I'm still feeling pretty good, but I've been having a lot of Braxton hicks in the evening and a few throughout the day, so I've been worried that I might have to start slowing down soon. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Listen to your body and cut back when you feel like you need to. I pushed myself and worked 4 weeks longer than I really should have. I remember reading a book that recommended you stop working at 28 weeks. I was about 25 weeks at the time and I thought that was so soon. Then I hit 28 weeks and felt like I hit a well. I kept working till 32 weeks. I did start cutting back more and more but looking back I really should have stopped at 28 weeks. I have no idea if I'd have stopped working sooner I'd have been able to stay pregnant longer, but I'm sure it couldn't have hurt!

I felt really good all throughout my pregnancy and worked until the day I delivered at 36w4d. Things definitely took me a lot longer than before (going up and down stairs) but overall I still felt really good
