Holy cankles

Postby HawkeyeGirl18 » Sun May 04, 2014 7:49 pm

I'm so happy to have hit the 32 week mark with no real problems so far. I thought that I was doing pretty good with my weight gain and was up 26 pounds at 30 weeks. This past week, my feet and ankles are starting to get pretty swollen and I suddenly gained another 8 pounds! Thankfully, my blood pressure still looks great. However, my OB wants to start weekly appointments and NSTs because he's worried about the sudden increase in fluid retention. Anyone else gain quite a bit of weight at the end due to swelling?

I did. Before my BP started spiking and before the pre-e set in, I think one month I gained like 11 lbs. I gained weight steadily the whole time though and when I delivered at 33 weeks I was up a total of 60lbs!

Sorry the swelling is starting to set in! I never had cankles but my feet got gigantic toward the end.

I'm glad everything is going well so far!

I have a tendency to retain fluid anyway (outside of PG), so I've been wearing support / compression sleeves and socks since about 12wks. They can be annoying, but they have saved me from ankle and foot swelling.
Go to a drugstore and pick up some compression socks. (the knee-hi length) They are tough to get on, but they truly make a big difference. If I wake up in the morning and wait more than 10min to put them on, my ankles and calves start tingling and itching with swelling already setting in.

Hi! Yup, I also had swelling in my hands, feet, and face (ugh) in the third tri. My bp was ok, but def watch your bp. Heads up, if u get a c section the swelling can get even worse! My ob called it "third space swelling" as a result of the iv fluids during and after surgery. The swelling in my feet was so bad that I developed calluses where the skin at the top of my feet rubbed. Hang in there!!! Lots of water and elevate.

Thanks for the replies! I wish I would've thought about the compression stockings before the swelling got bad because I have no idea how I would get them on now. I've cut back to working 4 hours per day, but the swelling has gradually been getting worse. My blood pressure is also starting to creep up. I have weekly appointments and NSTs now. I have a feeling after my next appointment on Thursday I will be done working all together. Hoping I can keep these two baking at least 4 more weeks!

So when you wake up in the morning after having your feet up all night, they are already swollen? Usually when I wake up, the fluid has shifted to my hands and a little in the face. Then I pee it out during the day.
I'm on the same plan - trying to keep these 2 cooking a few more weeks! So I stopped working and spend most of the day on the couch w/ my feet up. Just glad to not be on assigned bed rest. And my Dr hasn't mentioned NSTs yet - I'll have to ask next week if they're going to do one. Next week's appt will be 36wks for us.

Also - how much water do you drink? The more you drink, the less fluid retention you'll have. I try to get 100+oz per day, but really I feel like I should get more than a gallon at this point. And I know women who drank 2galls per day in the 3rd Tri w/ twins. I don't know how!

Yep, they're swollen when I wake up in the morning, although not as bad as when I'm up and about during the day. I try to drink at least 2 liters of water, but that's only 64oz, so I probably could do more. I'm down to working just 4 hours a day for one more week, then plan to stop all together (unless something changes before then).
