Did your babies need the nicu?

Postby Tiffne » Wed Nov 19, 2014 6:52 pm

We welcomed another niece to the family today. She's soo beautiful! She was delivered at the same hospital my doctor delivers so I got to ask a few questions. Unfortunately, they confirmed that hospital doesn't have a nicu. (why they dont, i have no idea!) Which means, if my babies come early and need the nicu they would be flown via helicopter to the nearest hospital while I would have to stay at this hospital. I know, it's possible my babies won't need the nicu but I just can't seem to think how I would feel if they did and I was stuck in one hospital while they were in another and I couldnt see/hold them. So I guess if all goes well at tmrws appt, I'll be switching doctors to a doctor who will deliver in one of the hospitals that has a nicu. I'm kinda upset with it all, maybe just my horomones, but I just wanted to complete this TTC journey with the same doctor I started with. He knows my story. I'm not sure how I go about switching doctors or even what to say to my current doctor. Or if I'll even like my new doctor. And what if they end up not needing the nicu? Ugh, I feel like a ton of stress has been loaded on my shoulders in a matter of minutes. :( Did your twins need the nicu?

I know where you are coming from and I had a similar situation. I switch doctors half way through pregnancy. I wanted to deliver at a hospital that specializes in pregnancy so I did. My babies were born at Sharp Mary Burxh for women and newborns. It is a highly advanced pregnancy hospital. I also had to change doctors to go here and I am so happy I did. My old hospital had a NICU but not a high level one so my twins would have also needed to be transported and I was not having that. My twins did end up needing the NICU. One was only for a few hours but the other stayed in till we were discharged 5 days later. And that was only cause I faught for it. They could have made her stay a couple more days but I pushed for the doc to come analyze her faster. Do what your gut tells you. I felt bad changing doctors but it was the best thing in the long run. My stay in the hospital was an amazing experience and the care my princess received in the NICU was beyond amazing. She ended up with a private room in the NICU so I was able to bring her sister to go visit for hours at a time :) good luck girl

How far apart are the hospitals?
I actually just changed from the huge hospital with the NICU, to a much smaller and more personal one without. I hate the big hospital, and have heard awful reviews of it. It is like a baby factory, and the staff are very rude. However, if my babies arrived too early, or there seemed likely to be another problem, I would be transferred back to the big hospital which is only 20 miles away.
I totally share your concerns about being separated from my babies but, for now, I am starting off where I feel more comfortable.

Thanks for your responses ladies! I'm not sure exactly how far apart they are from each other but I'm guessing within about 20 or so miles. But I do know, i want to switch to a hospital where my babies will be without having to be transfered. I'll have two options to choose from, one being Winnie Palmer. Winnie Palmer specializes in high risk pregnancies and is a women and babies hospital. I'm afraid with this that it would be like a baby factory, and being they're soo used to delivering babies, the delivery of my babies wouldn't be such a big deal. Idk, maybe I'm just over thinking it. The other is South Seminole where my nephew was born but my SIL wasn't very happy with this hospital, she likes this new one without the nicu. So maybe I should go with Winnie Palmer since they specialize with babies and haven't had any negative reviews so far? Decisions, decisions.

I think you need to visit both, and ask all your questions. Find out under what circumstances you would have to be transferred anyway to the bigger hospital, and how that would work. I'm sure you will feel more confident in your decision once you have done that :)

Honestly I would choose the one that is safest for the babies. Multiples get extra care and attention no matter what. It's not a regular every day birth they are really all Ovwr the care of the babies. My experience was exceptional and have nothing but amazing things to say. In fact I am going to go back and visit and bring or favorite NICU nurses a little something special. In my case both babies went to NICU but only 1 had to stay the whole time. I would hate that to happen to you and your babies possible having to be at seperate hospitals. At least I was able to go between them every day or just bring my other down to NICU with me eventually when we got our private room in NICU. Specialty hospitals are sometimes negatively reviewed as baby factories but in realty they have all the high tech machines and specialty doctors and nurses. I would rather have that then go to a smaller hospital where someone might have a person there to hold your hand the whole time if that makes sense. Having babies is about safety and I want experienced people to do so. It's all up to you I guess.
