Pregnancy After Trisomy 13

Postby mrsm44 » Tue Dec 10, 2013 12:44 pm

I was wondering whether any moms on here had a completely healthy pregnancy after having lost a pregnancy, in which the baby was diagnosed with Trisomy 13? I am currently going through the loss, so I am not yet ready to think about trying again, but it would be encouraging knowing other's stories. Thanks in advance!

So sorry for your loss! I can't tell you a success story as I am TTC after a blighted ovum in Oct. However, I know most losses are due to genetic issues that are random and don't effect your future chances of having a healthy pregnancy.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had to google Trisomy 13. Did you do any genetics testing in your first trimester that would have shown the abnormality?? I hope your hanging in there. If you need anyone to talk to please dont hesitate to reply. I found so much comfort on this website when I had my m/c in July.

Sorry for you loss. I know it's a very difficult thing to go through.

I'm 99% sure my loss was due to trisomy 13 as well. (slight chance it was 18, but 13 seems more like what I remember....I tried to block it out!)

I hope I can offer a little glimmer of hope for you. I got pregnant 2 cycles after my DNC. I'm over 33 weeks now and everything looks with the bean and the pregnancy thus far. I had the harmony test done at around 12 weeks if I remember (like all the other genetic blood tests to screen for abnormalities) and breathed a huge sigh of relief after getting promising results.

Take your time to heal and try again when you're ready. You'll get your rainbow baby.

I'm so sorry for your loss and empathize what your going through. My son died at 10 days old after going full term. While he didn't have a trisomy issue, he had multiple other issues that when put together was too much.
We waited 6 months before trying. I have been a nervous nelly through the whole pregnancy. I have had monthly ultrasounds and done many tests and have been told this lil guy is absolutely perfect but it doesn't help my nerves. I don't think I will sigh of relief until he is born in a few days.

Give yourself time to try again and deal with your loss. It's one you won't ever forget but others will.
Then try to be better then me and enjoy the next pregnancy.

If you ever want to talk feel free to msg me.

Hi mexicanchick...unfortunately, there is no routine test for Trisomy 13 in the first trimester...all they test for on a quad screen is Trisomy 21 and 18, because those are the most common.

Hopeful, thank you so much! I think we'll be trying again fairly soon, just need a little time to heal from our loss. We did hear back from the genetic counselor today, and neither DH or I are carriers, so the chance of recurrence is about 1%. Good news!

Glad to hear the news from your genetic counselor! Take your time. It'll be tough once you get your BFP to not worry, but remember the odds are in your favor! Wishing you a quick recovery and best of luck when you're ready to try again!
