drug free vs. pitocin contractions

Postby mommabuckley » Mon Jun 21, 2010 2:39 pm

I was just curious mama's that have had the opportunity for both drug free contractions and pitocin induced contractions (all the way through delivery) if there was REALLY that much of a difference pain wise.

With DD I was induced at 36 weeks for IUGR, totally closed and not ready to open. They forced me with cevadil (which dilated me 1cm) and then 70hours worth of pitocin. I never got the chance to feel a "natural" contraction so I was curious how much different an unmedicated contraction was compared to a pitocin induced there really is.

Well, I'm not sure if I quite qualify to answer but i got the pit about 25 hours into labor. My natural ctx weren't that bad until my water was broken then they were so intense and on top of each other.

The pit ctx meant business. They were strong and intense. I could feel my cervix opening/dilating. I didn't really feel the pain on the pit ctx b/c by then I was so freaking focused. It was amazing. I was worried that I would beg for pain relief but I didn't even think about it after the initial thought.

I didn't think about ctx being painful...I rather thought about them being strong. Intense=awesome ctx.

I've had natural contractions and induced contractions. Natural is not as intense. The tosin drip is extreemly intense. 10X harder at least.

I have had two without the pit and 3 with and for me the contractions were much more intense with the pit.

I had Pit with my oldest son and my uterus was stuck in a contraction for 30 mins... It was insanely painful and... I don't know, abnormal feeling. I had an all natural labor with my 2nd son and I was shocked out how bearable the contractions were compared to the pit contractions. They still hurt, but it was durable.

With DS1 I had to get the Pit, water broke no ctx, with DS2 and DD I labored naturally. For me I didn't really notice a difference either way, especially with being induced for my first, I didn't know anything else. But he was born after only 3 hours of the Pit. My other two labors were even faster without the Pit, so the contractions were just as intense as with the Pit.

I've had pit with all my deliveries so I dunno (my water likes to break first!) but I have found that ctx without the padding of the amniotic fluid are MUCH more painful......with DD2 I had been in ptl for weeks and the night my water broke it went from bad to unbearable once my water broke!

I had natural cxt for the first 42 hrs... LOL. I had stalled out so they gave me PiT.. as they increased the dose they got stronger and stronger. I could have gone the whole way w/o out the pit but was getting tired. My doula told me that with natural ctx your body produces a natural pain killer. That does not happen with PIT because the body is not doing the work so it does not know to produce the pain releaf. people think I am crazy for going drug fee but it really was not that bad at all.!!

I never thought of that! Now I'm regretting my OB breaking my water before giving me the Pit with my 1st daughter!

It was also interesting to read on this thread about the one woman who had natural L&D's being shorter than the one she had WITH Pit. I always thought my L&D was only 6 hours long due to the fact that I had Pit but maybe that's not the case! Gives me hope that this baby will come just as quick, even if I don't need the Pit. Great thread!

DD1 - Induced at 40w even with Pitocin. 12 hour labor...dilated fully...pushed for 2 hours...c-section. Got epi at 4cm because contractions were UNBEARABLE! RIGHT on top of each other. The nurses rushed in and turned off my pitocin because of it.

DD2 - Went into labor naturally at 38w3d. 5 hour labor...only got epi because dd was transverse and they were going to do a version. Didn't need it pain-wise.

Same for me... I also made it to 5cm then had to give in to an epidural because baby was in distress and I couldn't breathe with no rest between contractions. Also had a lot of vomiting. When they turned the drip off to put in the epi I felt a HUGE difference in the intensity. I honestly think if I had been allowed to labor naturally I could have done it without the epi, but baby needed to come out fast.

Big difference for me!! I was induced by pitocin with DD and couldn't stand the pain and had an epi by 4cms...I went into labor naturally with DS and didn't even go to the hospital until I was almost 6cms! I would've done it all without any pain meds but DS decided to go back to back and I began pushing too early which caused my cervix to swell, so I ended up with a spinal, but it did it's job by giving me a break so my cervix went down and I delivered med free, too! It was MUCH easier to have natural contractions, even though for me they were just as close together as my pitocin induced ones were (1-2 minutes apart as soon as they became regular) and my water broke before heading to the hospital, too.
