Meds after a c-section?

Postby CaseyB » Thu Jun 23, 2011 10:19 pm

I just found out yesterday at 36w5d that my baby is breech. My dr. is gonna give her two weeks to flip, but if she doesn't, I'll end up with a c-section. So I was just wondering what kind of medication you guys got after the c-section and if it affected your breastfeeding or not. BF'ing is really important to me, and I was originally planning a natural/med-free delivery. So I really don't want to be on any meds that will have an adverse affect on the baby or our breastfeeding. Also, which ones worked best for you for the pain?

I've had 3 c-secs and after the first 24hrs was on Voltaren & Paracetamol. I'm allergic to Morphine & Pethadine - so i had something else (can't remember the name) in the first 24hrs. Nothing they gave me affected breastfeeding and we had no issues!

I was drugged out the wazoo after my c-section and Wes was breastfeeding like a champ as soon as I was in recovery!

Before I went into the OR, I asked to have a LC/LN there to help me. They hospital I was at was really pro-BF, so there may have been one who would stop by anyways, but having the support of the LC/LN stopping by 2x a day was soooooo nice. If you are planning on BFing, and have any concerns I would totally recommend asking for a visit ASAP post surgery, it was seriously wonderful.

Morphine button for 24 hrs after surgery, then a choice of Vicodin or ibuprofen.

My advice is to take the ibuprofen. It works better and won't make the baby drowsy. That means better nursing.

They brought the baby to me to breastfeed as soon as I got to the recovery room, and he latched on great.

Afterward, I was given Percocet and Naproxen. It didn't completely take the pain away but made moving around easier. I felt spacey, but relaxed. It made breastfeeding easier because it dulled the cramps. I hope she flips!

I had a c/s for the same reason. I was given ibuprofen and percocet. I had no issues with bfing. I started bfing in the recovery room.

I was on a morphine pump for like 8-10 hours. I could just push a button when I started feeling uncomfortable. It was kinda nice.. :D

I have no idea what I was given during/directly after the section, but the 24 hours or so after I was on T3's (I think), stool softeners, and blood thinners. We never did BF, but it wasn't the drugs, he was stubborn and wouldn't latch at all.
