membrane stripping?

Postby mamadru10 » Sat Nov 17, 2012 7:55 am

Just curious if it worked for you? When did you have it done and what type of progress your cervix made before getting it done... how long did it take to work? I'm 38+3 and thinking about it because I would rather go into labor myself than be induced. I'm almost fully effaced 3-4cm and baby is at -1.

With DS1 - 39 weeks 6 days - I was 2 -3 cm dilated and fully effaced. After the sweep my doctor set up an induction date and let me go. I had me very first contraction at the bottom of the stairs to his office. 6.5 hours later my son was born.

With DS2 - 39 weeks 1 day - I was 2 - 3 cm dilated and fully effaced. My doctor told me to stay near the hospital, (she figured I was going to go into labour based on last time and it was going to be quick.) That was at noon I had my first contraction at midnight or a little later and at 3:38 am I was holding my son.

So it worked within 24 hours for both my boys, and I had very quick labours ;)

I was 39+5 when I had it done. I was 2cm, 90% effaced and baby was at +1.

I had wicked cramping the afternoon after I had it done and crazy bloody show. I went into labour 36hrs after it was done. However, I did TONS of walking in the snow between my appt and labour.

I had my membranes stripped my last 2 pregnancies starting at 37 weeks. I went into labor within 3 days. First one was at 37 weeks, second at 39 weeks. It was uncomfortable but so worth it! I did it to avoid induction too :)

I don't know if I can say that mine "worked" or not. I had it done at 39+6, but I didn't give birth until 5 days later. I did start having regular contractions 2 days later, but they were not dilating me at all. So I didn't vote on your poll because I didn't know what to say! :(

I'll be 39+2 tomorrow and getting mine stripped... I'll let you know if it works!! I've been having contractions and cramping on and off for a few days, so I'm hoping this pushes me over the edge :)

DH and I have been talking and agree that if we are looking like we may be late I will do this. I'll do pretty much anything to avoid a chemical induction when the time comes...so even if this doesn't work 100% of the time for me it is so worth it to try. Just my two cents!

FYI, membrane stripping is technically a means of induction, and it can put you at risk for infection since they are pushing their finger right up through your cervix into your uterus to lift the amniotic sac.

I personally would not do anything to encourage labor before you are already showing signs, but especially not prior to 39 weeks due to the risk of prematurity, unless of course you have a medical necessity like preeclampsia. There are so many babies born at 38 weeks that "should" be full term but end up having respiratory difficulties because they just were not quite ready to come out yet, and that is why it's now a requirement for hospitals to report the rates of elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks to outside quality control companies, and it will eventually (if not already) be something that you can find publicly reported. Why doctors & baby books say 37+ weeks is full term when they also say pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, I'll never understand. The vast majority of mothers & babies, if left alone to initiate labor when the hormones naturally signal it, will go into labor on their own between 39 and 42 weeks. Yeah, it sucks being huge for another week or two, but what is a few more days of pregnancy compared to a possible NICU stay?

Old thread but I thought I would share my experience.

For me it worked a treat! I was 41weeks and this was the first step before scheduling an induction date. I was 3-4cm when it was done and midwife was surprised I hadn't been having painful contractions yet. Had quite alot of blood after sweep was preformed. Went home, couldn't get comfortable, 2hours after sweep I decided to have a nap, after lying down for 5mins I thought hmm I am actually little sore. 6hours later I was holding my beautiful baby boy.

Mine was stripped at 38w0d because I was scheduled for induction at 39wk and wanted to avoid Pitocin. At the time of my sweep I was 3cm dilated and 50% effaced. All it did was make me crampy for that day and the day after. My water broke 1hr before my induction at exactly 39wks.
