Registration?

Postby PrairieDawn » Sat Jan 26, 2013 11:30 pm

I am a Canadian living in the USA with my husband. Back in Canada, when I was in labor, all I had to do was get to the hospital. I heard from a few friends who recently had babies that in the USA you need to pre-register before being able to use the hospital that your OB/GYN resides at. Is this true?

At my hospital it is not a requirement, just a suggestion. It is something you can do to make being admitted easier on you. DH and I got the pre-registration form when we took the hospital tour. I have it filled out and will turn it in at my next OB appointment. It simply keeps you from having to think about all that info when your in labor. We are required to have a pediatrician set up prior to delivery and have your car seat installed.

Yeah I don't think its mandatory, just makes it easier to get all the info when you aren't mid-contraction ya know!?

I know you already have responses, but I thought I'd toss in my two cents. I preregistered just because they said if you arrive at the hospital in serious labor/pain, it will be so much nicer not to have to answer a bunch of questions. Well, I was in serious pain and it was so nice to just get whisked back to the exam room and get my crap together quickly! So you don't really NEED to but it's pretty awesome to have it all taken care of! :)

The birthing center in the wing of our hospital (yes, birthing center! Not just L&D) requires you to pre-register if you are planning on delivering there by 20 weeks. Of course if you join later in the game they aren't going to turn you away, but like PP said it speeds up the process for when they admit you.
