Not Dilating - any suggestions?

Postby BabyJ#1 » Mon Feb 03, 2014 12:29 pm

I'm 39 weeks and I'm not dilated at all even though I've been having contractions since baby dropped at 36 weeks. I've got a lot of pelvic pain & I'm hardly able to go for walks (weather & conflicting schedules) so what could I do to help begin dilating before I'm induced?

Nipple stimulation (either with a pump, partner, or yourself), and sex. Bouncing on yoga ball. I've heard eating spicy foods helps too. Good luck! You can always refuse the induction just so you know : ) Give baby a little extra time. Many women go past 40 weeks

I learnt at our ante-natal classes that frequently rubbing you bump also brings on labor.

Are they planning on checking the baby's position? With my first I had some contractions but never dilated or effaced. The baby was head down BUT they realized a few days before my due date that the baby was actually transverse oblique. Her head was down but stuck behind my hip and her body was across the top half of me ...so they never caught it on ultra sound. I wasn't a candidate for induction because of that and had a c section. My second who was just born was the same position but different side. Worth asking for a check on positios.

Sex lol. I know it doesn't seem fun right now, but semen contains prostaglandins which play a role in softening your cervix. :)

Luckily he is in the proper birthing position. I have sex as much as I can but with all the pelvic pain it just hardly happens. I'm taking the evening primrose tablets to make up for the less sex thing. Next appointment is tomorrow :fingers crossed:

Sometimes your body is progressing in other ways rather than dilating, so baby may be coming even further down or cervix softening or some other progress we don't understand. Sometimes dilation just bang happens. I think it helps most to relax and let your body do its thing. Using a breastpump can help keep contractions going and maybe help them be more productive and regular.

Don't worry!! I was only at 1cm at 40 weeks! Tons of prelabor contractions, even false labor and nada. My midwife didn't like to check so I didn't even know if I was effacing! But labor hit and I progressed quickly to 6cm before my labor slowed (don't let that scare you lol I had a big boy).
