With my mom they broke her water a 7am when she was 5 cm and I was born 14 minutes later.

My sister had her first real contraction at midnight and was only at the hospital for 10 minutes when they broke her water, she pushed two times and DD#1 was born! In total she was in labor for 90 minutes.

With DD#2 she was in labor for 2 hours start to finish and pushed three times!

No drugs or epi with #1..totally natural homebirth! LOVED it! It just wasn't that bad that I couldn't handle it, although it did hurt a ton! The ring of fire was easier on me then the contractions. I think what helped me deal with it so well was my research and talking to everyone about every aspect of labor and birth, so I knew what to expect and what could happen and kinda what it would feel like and I knew about the ring of fire. It's a lot easier to relax and let your body work if you know what is coming.

I had a 12 hour labor and pushed for 1 1/2 hours. I didn't tear at all and there was no bleeding until after the placenta came out. i was down to a panty liner within 3 days of the birth!

It was wonderful and I will be doing it again for #2!!

The one and only thing that surprised me and that no one really told me was how much the contractions still hurt in between the time the baby is born and the time the placenta comes out. Especially when you breast feed right away (which you should do!!). It's not as bad as before the baby comes, but they still hurt really badly! :)

DD#1 was a drug free birth. It was relatively short (4 1/2 hours including pushing time). Altogether it was obviously survivable but totally painful. I think the worst part was just not knowing when it was going to end!!

DD#2 was an epi baby and she was even faster 2 1/2 hours total. i was overdue and my midwife was sneaking me into L/D cause I was 4cm dilated and still wouldn't go into labor. Luckily I was having barely detectable contraction so she kept me and broke my water. As soon as my water was broke I said "Epi" please.

I by far preferred the unmedicated birth, I felt more in control and my recovery was faster immediately after birth.

Drug free baby!!! I had a relatively quick first labor...6 hours...40 minutes of pushing..I got the hospital at 12:20, and Riley was born at 2:41!!! When I got to the hospital I was already 7-8cm dialated...I did a lot of laboring at home!! And I'll definately do the same with this baby, although I may not be able to wait as long before going to the hospital...don't want the baby born in the car!

I had an all natural birth, with a epi. The contractions were coming very fast and very quickly so I had no time to learn to cope. I'm soooo glad I had that epi!

I've done it both ways! The natural was hard during and with the second I had an epi and that left me with serious back pain for about a month after. This time I'm gonna try to go natural again, but with IV drugs if I need it (I'm trying to avoid the epi).It felt wonderful during, but I could do without the after effects.

all natural here too - dd#1 wanted to see what it felt like (crazy i know!!) but had most of 7hr labour in bath and only got out to push her out...with dd#2 we didnt have time for anything she decided she was coming and that was that!! and i was too far gone when we got to hospital they said they wouldnt give me anything anyway!!
but i felt the ring of fire both times - it has been etched into my memory forever 8O 8O nothing like a warm compress to help though...oohh that felt so good :D

so this time i am gonna go in with the open mind again, but with the hope that i can do it drug free again....what will be will be - .... :D

The ring of fire is when the baby's coming down the canal and the doctor makes you stop pushing so you can stretch that last centimeter to full dilation. It's really the one feeling that even slips by the natural painkilling endorphins a bit. But yeah, it feels like fire down below!!!

smittenkitten = i thought that 'ring of fire' was when the head crowned??
that is what the midwives told me when i delivered our two dds....maybe it means different things in different parts of the world???? :D
