Questions for the experienced moms

Postby Tashi » Mon Jan 19, 2009 8:10 pm

This is my first baby and I'm nervous about labor and delivery. I have no idea what a contraction feels like. I haven't even felt a braxton hicks one. I think I am going into this expecting the worst pain imaginable. Did labor hurt you more or less than you thought it would? Thanks!!!

it's hard to say once you've given birth and you have your little bundle of joy, you sort of forget the intensity of the pain! lol .. but i'd have to say labor was much easier and much less painful than i had anticipated! just remember to breath through them! that's what helped me get through them. deep breaths in through your nose, and cleansing exhales through the mouth!

Looking back, it was all a blur, lol. I was expecting horrible cramping but what hurt the most for me was the intense pressure with every contraction; that is something I didn't expect. I didn't have an epi or anything (and ended up with a c-section). But I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought it could be.

And I agree with breathing! You might not think you'll be able to breathe through the pain, but you can and it helps!!

I ended up with a section but had a very long and painful labor. I made it to 8 cms just breathing calmly through the cxs. You will be surprised what your body can handle!

I just wanted to say I totally know how you feel. I was scared out of my mind. I had a plan to labor at home as long as I could then head to the hospital and get an epidural then just rest until it was time. Ya didn't happen that way. I was in labor for only 5 hours and progressed too quickly to get an epidural. Honestly, I don't really remember the pain as weird as that sounds. I was in so much pain that it was such a blur and my only goal was to get him out. Pushing for me was soo much easier then the contractions. Just remember you will survive and that in the end, all the pain is worth it! It definitely is extremely scary but the nurses are there to help you through it. The worst part that I remember is having those stupid monitors on me because I kept bumping them and the nurse kept yelling at me. I was about to kill her but I apologized afterward for being so mean!

Thanks for the responses :) Your experiences definitely help! I thought I was going to faint during the hospital tour today when the nurse showed us the L&D room.

The contractions were more painful than I thought they would be.

They were like bad menstrual cramps x1000 for me. I have really bad period pains and contractions were MUCH worse.

It varies for everyone though. 2 of my sisters barely felt anything during their birth experiences. I felt just about everything even with an epidural. I can't imagine what it would have been like without one.

I voted more purely because the labour itself was definitely more painful than I could have imagined. I think the only reason was because I had such bad back labour. I couldn't tell you what a normal contraction feels like. I have to say on the upside, that the actual pushing part was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. After all that pain it was such a relief to be able to let my body do what it wanted to do ( I had the urge to push from 4cms dilated). The 'ring of fire' also wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Good luck, no matter what happens,it's true that the memory of exactly what it felt like the pain will quickly fade in your .

I didnt vote because I think it was as I expected. The pain is definately managable as long as you stay calm and breath through the contractions. I went through most of the labour on my own in the ward. The nurses came in a few times and asked how I was and told me to call them when the pain became unbearable  . Well Órlaith ended up being born in the corridor, the nurses were like "We told you to call us when it became unbearable" and I was saying "Well what the hell is unbearable, I can bear alot" cripes.

Cally-lol! I would've loved to see the look on the nurses faces after you said that!

It's SO amazing how everyone has such different experiences. Even talking to ladies at work. Just amazing.

The pain is different that any other pain you have experienced. Its pain with a purpose, which is how I got through it with no drugs. I just kept telling myself, "my body is made to do this." And i did it! I loved my birth experience. Just go in with an open mind!

I don't know how to answer the poll, because for me it was both! Getting to 8 cm was a lot less painful than I expected, but transition was worse than I thought it would be. Like PP said, it was the intense pressure that I wasn't prepared for. But then again, my transition lasted 3 hours, and I think that's unusually long. The membranes would NOT break and that was the last thing we were waiting for.

With DD it was both. I was surprised at how far I got without meds (I was at 8), but also how out of control I felt near the end. My body was doing things for me and I was not happy with that!

i remember wen she checked me i was impressed with how far along i was cuz the pain wasnt nearly as bad as i thot it wud be. i was 6 and went to 8 while she checked.. 2 mins later i was fully dialated and pushing. up til the pushing i cud defo handle it. i just tried to relax and be as calm as possible. ill admit. pushing sucked tho. but maybe only cuz it lasted an hour and a half for me.

You know the pain scale of 1-10 they constantly ask you about at the hospital... I now know what a 10 is.
