I have been exclusively pumping now for about 4 weeks & my nipples KILL during the first few minutes of pumping. I've been putting cream on them to lube them up before pumping & keeping it on them after so they don't get cracked. Do I just have the most tender nips in the world? What do you guys do for this? Will they eventually quit hurting like this the first few minutes???

are your shields big enough? sometimes that can make your nipples hurt more if they are being pulled into a shield that is too small, I also used to rub a little olive oil on the inside of my shields which seemed to help some. I hope it gets better for you. EP really is hard work.

I might try the olive oil...

I started out with the 27mm cones, but when I went to the LC to do Sadie's weight check she told me they were way too small & fit me for the 30mm. So, I've had them since she was 1 week old & am pretty sure they fit good.

I asked my doc yesterday about it at my 6 week pp visit. She said that eventually it wouldn't hurt so bad...I just feel like maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks for the suggestion & reply though!!! It is very much appreciated!

Hopefully they will "get used to it" soon and they will stop hurting. Are your boobs bigger than they were when she told you to get the 30 mm? or was your milk already in then? if they still fit pretty good maybe you are just senative and it will take some time to get used to it.
I dont know your whole story yet- it could be something like what I went through with DS#1- he never had a good latch (which is why I had to EP) and he damaged my nipples so bad that it took a while for them to stop hurting. And as your know the pump just hurts sometimes.
I hope it gets better for you soon! EP is hard enough (phisycally and mentally) without any setbacks. :hugs:

Thanks girl!

My Story: Sadie immediately latched on after birth. She was doing really good until the night before we went home. She was getting extremely hungry & just needed more than the colostrum she was getting. The LC consultant praised her & me for how well we were both handling breastfeeding and even said she wished more babies would be like Sadie. Well, she sucked so hard, was getting so angry b/c she wasn't getting much that she didn't latch very well from then on. We went back for her weight check with the LC at 4 days old (my bbs were at their biggest b/c my milk had just came in the afternoon before her appt), and the LC called me in some compound cream for my bbs b/c they had gotten so cracked at the top to where I was bleeding & there were scabs. That's when she fitted me for the cones too. Sadie stopped taking the breast that day, so I had to start pumping a bit to get her what she needed until I got my nips better. Once they were better, we used a nipple contact shield to nurse b/c she had gotten so used to the feel of the bottle. She did well with that until she was diagnosed with bad reflux. So, now I'm having to pump exclusively in order to thicken her milk with cereal (I didn't want to give her the antacids if I didn't have to). So far the cereal is working PERFECTLY! Not much reflux at all. Every now and then I breastfeed her, but it usually ends in a projectile vomit b/c of her reflux. Poor baby! Anyways...that's my story. I'm going to try the olive oil!!! hopefully that helps & eventually it gets better.

Im so happy i found this thread. My lo will be 4 wks on the 10th and still not up to his birth weight. for some reason i can not put weight on him so i have been pumping so that we know that he is getting something. i go back on the Jan 13th for weight check to see if this has made a difference if not i don't think breastfeeding/.pumping is going to work for us.

How long should i pump each time? I've been pumping every 2 hrs but not getting very much

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Michelle

Our appt on the 13th he weighed 8.13 so that is good. My pedi is telling me not to nurse so much cause it will tire him out. So i have been pumping and nursing maybe 2-3 times a day. He is getting alittle better some times he falls asleep right away and i have a hard time waken him. Yesterday he nursed for 25 min on one side and stayed awake most of that time. We go back on feb 4th for 2 month and weight check. If he has put on more weight then i will start nursing more. Im just afraid of him loosing more weight.

Re: Info or questions about Exclusively Pumping

I have a exclusively pumped for a whole year for my 26 weeker DD. I've never been an over producer, but I've always been able to provide the milk that she needs. I've only had to supplement with formula a few times over the past year.

I've pumped through 78 days in the NICU, colds, headaches, good days and bad days. I've pumped with a newborn preemie at home, in the car, at school, at family members' houses, in front of people and alone. I've pumped through a PICU stay, a beach vacation, mastitis and going back to work full time. Let's just say Medela and I have become very close.

I am grateful for going hands free, having access to a laptop, fenugreek, mother's milk tea, oatmeal and gatorade---all things that have allowed me to keep going. I am fortunate to have a husband who will get up and feed DD at while I have to pump. I am lucky to have so many people support me with my pumping efforts along the way.

I'm not a person who gives up early, so when my pregnancy unexpectedly ended early...pumping was the one thing that only I could do for my daughter. I took pumping very seriously, made it a priority and became committed.

Do I have plans to stop anytime soon? Nope. My goal is to pump until DD is one year adjusted in January if all continues to go well. I'm at 4 ppd right now and plan to slowly decrease over the next few months. I want DD to have breastmilk through another winter/flu/ RSV season.

I encourage all new pumpers to keep at it. It is hard in the beginning, but it gets easier. For me pumping is now a part of everyday life and the best gift I can give my daughter :-)
