We're fading :( (Update)

Postby BeccaM » Thu Feb 16, 2012 6:47 pm

LO has been suddenly showing little interest in nursing the past week or two. I cut out most daytime feedings about a month ago, because he wasn't that interested in them and wanted more solid food and started drinking milk from a cup. He's a busy guy! Then I hoped to stick to our two feedings for a long time, but he started STTN last week and hasn't looked back (so far). I like that he's sleeping through and not waking me up for the 5 am feeding, but I also miss it at the same time! Now he's resisting his bedtime feeding. He'd rather read books, roughhouse with daddy, etc... and keeps popping off and not wanting to nurse. I think he's weaning :( He's 15 months old, and I'm happy we made it past 12 months--that was my goal, but it is a bit sad to me that our nursing relationship seems to be coming to an end.

UPDATE:

Well, we went on a 10 day trip and while we were gone, LO weaned. :( He was down to one feeding before bed for a few weeks before that, and he just wasn't interested, only on the breast for a couple of minutes and kept popping off. A couple of nights, he fell asleep before his nursing. So we made 16 months and 4 days! I am so thankful to God for blessing me with almost a year and half of happy nursing--it was a very special season, and I am looking forward to having another nursling by next year!

Aww...So bittersweet, isn't it? I fear we are not too far behind you! LO has been dropping feedings, but for the moment is holding tight to our bedtime and morning ones. You have done a tremendous job, Becca!!!

:hugs: Becca, you did so awesome getting your little man to the point where he is self-weaning! It was really sad for me when my DD self-weaned at 14 months (I also planned to BF her longer), and I missed it for a long time. We also held onto the 3am feeding for weeks after DD refused to nurse while she was awake, then she just started sttn and the days passed without nursing. Once I stopped trying to force it, our relationship became a lot less stressful. You can't ask for more than that kind of gentle transition for your baby's sake. On the bright side, it was nice to have my body back as my own for a little while before another pregnancy and nursling came along.

I did want a break before the next one. We plan on starting TTC in a month or two, and I didn't really have much interest in tandem nursing, so I am glad about that. He was so into it just a couple of months ago, but he's changing so fast and getting very independent. I have a feeling that when AF comes the end of the month, my supply is going to be almost nonexistent and he'll probably wean then :(

congrats and hugs to you, mama. Weaning is SO hard and emotional, let it be comforting that it is his choice and that he's secure and comfortable with it. Cry if you need to, eat brownies and let yourself go through the emotions it needs to. We're here for you! You've done an awesome job!

Thank you for your kind words! I wish I could eat brownies, but I just got my wisdom teeth out the other day and I'm on a liquid diet *sniff*. Maybe ice cream? :P

He's actually weaning faster than even I thought. I was in excruciating pain last night from one side of my mouth--so bad I was crying--and I just couldn't let down my milk much at all when he nursed before bed. He did fine getting hardly any milk, so... I guess he's ready to quit anytime.

Momma you did an amazing job. It is so bittersweet. Just keep focused on the future and you will have a new nursling soon enough :) Lots of hugs.

oh sweet momma, I dread this day so much. Its funny how much I once thought getting through 6 months of BFing was the ultimate goal, and now approaching our year mark I am so sad already about the prospect that some day she will wean.

I know you know what a great job you have done and how proud you and DS should be of you accomplishments. Congrats on an amazing milkstone, and lots of virtual hugs for the tears.

Thank you for your kind comments everyone!

LO has decided he is going to hang onto this last feeding for a little while longer yet :). He's teething hard (molars) and suddenly is showing interest again. My milk is almost gone, but I'll let him have this one feeding until he's done. So maybe we'll make it 16 months!

Thanks for stalking--I am looking forward to another little one, but the thought is occasionally scary when LO has a hard, fussy day like today 8O

Awww, you've done such a great job!! We are at the exact same spot! D is nursing 2x a day (morning and night) so it won't be long! We want to start trying again soon, maybe we will be in the same DDC again.
