day 1 of pumping at work

Postby jessm » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:09 am

So far so good! I pumped at 10:25 and got 4.5 ounces, which is what my mom fed the baby. Hopefully the rest of my pumpings will go this well, as it had been 3 hours from when I nursed, but the rest of my pumpings will be spaced 2 hours apart. Any tips for increasing what I get? It seems I get the majority of my milk in about 10 minutes. I was only able to get one letdown. I've heard you can get more.

i always get much more milk in the morning,.so dont be discouraged if you dont get as much later in the day. also, if you pump every 2 hours, thats awesome. you may not get as much at each session but you are doing more frequent sessions which is recommended in order to keep your supply up. you might find that as you get into the flow of pumping regularly, you will pump more.

i usually pump for 20 min in the morning. I get 2-3 letdowns. I pump and after 10 mins, i use this function on my pump to stimulate the breast and bring on a letdown. then right at about the 20 mins mark I sometimes get another letdown naturally. in the afternoon, I generally pump for 15 mins because I dont have as much milk to pump out. morning I get 7-10 oz and afternoon generally 3-4 ounces.

be sure to drink lots of water before you pump.
good luck!

I didn't get the chance to power pump this past weekend, but I'm going to do it on Sunday this weekend. Hopefully that will increase my supply. I'm coming up about 2 oz short of what he needs. Which isn't too hard to replace with added pumpings. This morning I dipped into my stash though.

Hey Jess. Glad it's going well so far.

I was crap at pumping, but it did help to use a little breast compression while pumping. I found it expedited how much I could get out in a pumping session. GL!

Thanks Em. I am trying to do hand compression, especially at the end. I find I do have to pump for like 20-25 minutes to get that extra little bit. Which lets face it, every drop counts. And I hand express after.

Sounds like you're doing great then. I seriously admire you pumping mommies. I just could never get into a good routine with it. Keep it up!

Hand expression after really helps get a little more out of there. Drink lots of water. I would drink a cup of Mothers Milk tea when I got to work, and again in the afternoon. At least an hour before pumping. I found this helped.

Also, pump for longer than you need. It helped maintain my supply when I could pump for 20 minutes or more. If you stop at 10 it will start to impact your supply.

It helps some peopel to look at pics of their baby. For me it helped to not think abuot what I was doing and play games or do work or something. If you stress over every drop while you pump it will reduce yoru output.

I had this problem as well. I struggled with a low supply at first and had to supplement with formula for a few weeks. I tried to relax and not focus so much on the small amounts that I was getting. If I stressed too much about the amount, I had a hard time getting more than one or two letdowns per pumping session. Now, I'm getting about three letdowns per session and more milk than Mason needs in a day. I usually pump for an extra few minutes after that third letdown even though I know I'm not going to get much more in the hopes that it will help maintain/increase my supply.

I get the majority of my milk in the first...6 minutes. Then I do get maybe 1 more letdown, but its not as much. I keep playing with the settings.
