not keeping up

Postby jessm » Wed May 23, 2012 8:38 am

I am not keeping up with my little man. He is starting to want more in his bottles and my supply is starting to dip. Great on Mondays and goes down throughout the week. I'm so upset.

Sorry, mama. I know the feeling. But keep nursing and keep pumping.
We had to start supplementing 1/2 & 1/2 with formula while at daycare. I don't feel that bad since i'm still nursing and she's getting BM the majority of the time.

When you're home with him, how often do you nurse? And is he night-weaned?

He was STTN but he's not any more. I'm hoping he will start. I nurse him once before I leave for work and 4-5 times after work, just depending on how hungry he is. Sometimes I nurse him twice in the morning.

Can you do a weekday overnight nursing vacation? Put him on the book as much as you can when you're home for a week. Do a dreamfeed or two at night. Eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast. See what happens?

power pumping, fenugreek, and oatmeal really do wonders.

With dd I worried if I didn't make the exact amount she ate while I was at work but at the end I had a freezer stash that feed her for about a month when I stopped pumping at work around 14 months. So, I think I was worried for nothing.

Good luck!!

I have about 50 oz in the freezer that I built up while I was home on leave. If I have to I will do MOTN pumps on the weekend. I just ordered a nursing supplement and am starting it today. He's starting to want to eat more. That's the problem. I REALLY don't want to do formula. So far I haven't dipped into my stash very much. I pump great on Mondays and that makes up for some of my less pumping. I made lactation cookies, and ate oatmeal this morning so hopefully all of that combined will help. I feel very strongly about breast milk.

I always had the best success pumping early morning, when I did pump at all (I would hand pump one side while he nursed the other, which seemed to produce more milk, and then nurse him again not too long after that... this seemed to help boost supply). Mother's Milk Tea also helped, as well as taking calcium supplements and eating plenty of protein.

The best thing for supply is nursing often! Offer even more often if he will take it, when you're around him--that will cause your body to kick in and produce more!

Also just adding: my son had a growth spurt or two around that age, was teething a lot, and I got my first post partum period which caused a dip in supply, so we also had a rough time around then. Things straightened out though, and we made until 16 months!! (no formula)

him waning to nurse more is his way of increasing your supply. Make sure you're drinking lots of water too. As long as he keeps nursing you'll keep making more milk. Try not to let the stress of it all get to you, the fear of not making enough milk is enough to cause a dip in supply. You're doing an amazing job - keep it up!

I let him nurse as much as he wants. The kid loves his boobie lol. Daycare says he loves his bottle too. I sent him with some cereal today. He's 5 months next week and started to show the signs of being ready for solids. So I'm letting him try it out. He seems intrigued by it lol

I went through a spell where my supply dipped with my last baby and I was starting to panic! I tried the fenugreek, the lactation cookies, extra pumping (including one at 3am - not fun but helpful) and finally tried this:

Worked wonders!! The lactation department where I delivered recommended it to me. I have several friends who have tried it since and swear by it as well.

I bought it at my local health food store, Whole Foods.

Good luck!

Relax (lol, what rubbish advice that is), think about Dec when you pump, look at a pic if you are away from him. Eat chocolate as that helps with oxytocin. Limit mint as that is a milk reducer. Fennel tea is supposed to be good. The suggestions of oats are a great idea. You can do compressions during pumping.

Another question I had though is are you circulating your stash? Freezing some of the newly pumped milk and defrosting milk for daycare. Obviously not supply related as such.

I only circulate as milk gets close to the expiration date. Otherwise I send him to daycare with fresh milk.

4-5 months is the WORST when you're a working mother. I remember going down to the last few ounces on a regular basis and thinking I'd never make it. But think, in just a few months, he will be eating solid foods more regularly and will be able to make it through the daycare day with fewer bottles. This is the toughest period, so hang in there!

Thanks. I'm dedicated to pumping until he's 1 but I so hate it.
