Pumping issue

Postby rkegreen » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:44 am

Ok girls!

Little background. I am a full time working momma. I BF when around baby and then pump when I am not. (About 2 times while at work, I can go home on my lunch break to nurse)

I pumped for DD1 until she was 14 months, and nursed her until she was 30 months.

I am noticing the same thing with DD2 as I did with DD1.

My left breast is my milk maker. In my am session I can get about 5 oz from that breast. My right breast just falls so short. I am lucky if I can get 1.5-2oz from it. I don't get a strong flow from it either. I will get a let down, but then it was trickle milk. I can feel my breast get hard, but it is like it won't let the milk out.

I used to let DD1 nurse and nurse and nurse from it in hopes of helping supply with no success.

I am now noticing it again with DD2. She gets so mad and frustrated because I can't get the milk to come out like the left breast.

Any idea what could be going on or how to fix it?

Totally normal. My left produces SO MUCH more than my right. I usually pump 3-4 times as much. And DS gets frustrated at the right sometimes. But occasionally gets enough from it. You really can't correct it...

My right is a better producer. Just how it goes sometimes!

I think a lot of folks have one that just does better. My righty was my super producer. He got frustrated on lefty, but I would make him nurse there anyway.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I pumped for 9 months for DS1 and for 8.5 months for the twins. Lefty always produced way less. I tried supplements, pumping longer, nursing more from that side, everything. Nothing worked to increase.

I don't think there's much you can do with it. I had the same issue pumping for my daughter. At first, I was able to get just as much from the right as from the left, but it took twice as long to get it from the right. Then as time went by and I just didn't have as much time to pump, the right supply got less and less. The left was usually able to compensate though!

Weird, huh? I had/have the same problem, though it's less pronounced with DD2 now that I stay at home. Pumps just aren't as effective at getting the milk out of a low-flow boob lol. There are women who nurse/pump well into toddlerhood with only one boob producing at all. Like the other ladies have said, that's just how it goes sometimes and the big producer compensates for the other one.
