How many 4oz storage bottles should I keep in the freezer for occasional babysitter use only (SAHM)?

How much should I store?

Postby larchelle » Thu Jul 05, 2012 1:10 pm

I'm going to be a SAHM, so I only need extra for the occasional babysitter/DH etc, so I'm planning to just pump one 4oz bottle a day. I'm going to buy the 4oz Lifefactory glass bottles that screw directly into the Medela and I'm wondering how many I need to buy (since that's what I'm going to store the milk in).

How many should I keep in the freezer at one time? I've read it lasts 3 months but I don't think I really need to keep 90 4oz bottles in the freezer for my needs, right? So how many 4oz storage bottles should I keep in the freezer at once for this type of very occasional usage? Thx!

It depends on how often you go out. I think they say 3-6 months for breast milk. Keep in mind if you go to the movies the baby will probably need at least 2 bottles. I would shoot for keeping about 20-30 oz in the freezer. You can always add more later if you run out.

Do you have a deep freezer or just the regular freezer attached to fridge? If it's a deep freezer, it can last up to a year.

I wouldn't think you'd need very many bottles. Maybe 10 at the most? You could keep more though if you had a deep freezer and it kept longer.

Ah!!! I didn't know you were pregnant! Congrats!! And TWINS!!

I think 20-30oz is a good range. Replace as used. :-)

How long milk lasts will depend on your freezer. Here's a guideline: http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milk ... lkstorage/

Personally, I don't think you need a huge stash. Enough for a couple of bottles, maybe a day's worth, that's about it. Even if you CAN keep it for six months, remember that your breast milk will be significantly different then as your child's nutritional needs will have changed. I only have a small stash, and I rotate every three months.
