How much breastmilk does a 10 month old need each day?

Postby LaraE » Thu Jul 05, 2012 3:39 pm

My daughter is about to turn 10 months old on Saturday. I'm wondering about how much BM she needs each day? She sleeps all night so she doesn't nurse after about 7:00pm. I nurse her first thing when she wakes up, usually around 6am.
She eats 3 meals a day and has a few snacks here and there. The only other thing she drinks throughout the day is a little bit of water in a sippy cup with meals.

When she is home with me, she nurses roughly every 2-3 hours but she doesnt nurse for long (i've heard thats typical for this age). At daycare she takes bottles, but less than 10oz of BM from 8am-4pm. Is this OK?

I feel like my supply has dipped also. Today i pumped twice during the day and only got 3.5 + 2.5 oz total. That's how much I used to get in just one pump session. I am on my 3rd PPAF though so maybe that has a lot to do with it?

Just wondering if she is getting enough BM throughout the day and if I'm even producing enough for her. Hard to tell.

I think ten month olds can vary quite a bit. At ten months my DS was nursing 5 times in 24 hours. Once in morning, twice before his naps, once before bed and once in the early morning around 4 - 6 am. He quickly dropped that 2nd morning feeding also, because he's always been one to eat a big breakfast of solid food. Then soon after 10 months he was on 4 times in 24 hrs for a long time.

He was eating 3 small meals a day and a snack before bed at that point.

I guess i should count how many times i'm nursing in a 24 hr period. I feel like i have her on the breast quite frequently which makes it aggravating that my supply has decreased so much. I really want ti make it to 1 yr

The general rule for breastfed babies, no matter the age, is 1-1.5oz of BM per hour. So 10ish in an 8 hour period is perfect. :)

It is normal to see a dip in supply during AF, it will probably increase a bit in a day or two.

I think it varies from baby to baby. Declan nurses a lot when he's with me, but I'm not sure how much he eats. He eats 10-14 oz while I'm at work (but he's 6 months old).

Also, keep in mind that your pump isn't as efficient as the baby. I think he always gets more than my pump could dream of.

Not at all, especially at that age. :)

Our schedule, at 15 months is:

At waking (around 8)
Before nap (noonish)
After nap (2:30/3ish)
Mid evening (5ish)
Before bed (8ish)
And then 1-3+ times a night.

Just do what works for you. :)

Seems good to me!

We were doing less by then, as I mentioned, but if my son had had a different personality I would have been open to nursing more and longer. He just was always a "cranky" nurser and always had better things to do :D.

My baby is 10 months old. she is drinking 3 full big bottles of formula milk a night.
With the UV-Blocker beach umbrella I’m able to go to the beach on weekends with my family.
