nursing and surgery

Postby jessm » Fri Aug 03, 2012 8:40 am

So I just found out I have to have foot surgery *eventually*. I would like to do it before the next pregnancy, but I don't plan on weaning before then. So, has anyone continued nursing after a surgery? I'm thinking I will have to pump and dump the day of, and then after that continue my regular nursing activities. I plan on waiting until I get DS down to nursing only 1 or 2 times a day.

I haven't, but I know it's doable. Grab a copy of Dr. Hale's Medications and Mother's Milk and push for breastfeeding-friendly drugs!

Thanks. I don't want to do anything that will sabotage our nursing relationship, because I love love love breastfeeding. Although when he gets teeth he's going to need to learn to open his mouth before popping off.

I had shoulder surgery back in Feb. when baby girl was 6 months old. I did have to pump and dump for 24 hours but it didn't affect our nursing relationship at all. We're still going strong now, at 12 months. Good luck!

Definitely take a look at Kellymom and talk to a LC beforehand. There are a lot of drugs that your typical doctor will suggest you pump and dump after that aren't necessary. A LC will be able to help out a lot more as far as that goes.
